Maybe this is just wishful thinking, but I'm thinking of a scenario that plays out like this:
In the Summer of 2010, Songaila will be 31 years old. Let's say Lithuania offers him a contract for $3M a year for 4 years. Songaila would be in a position where he could choose to play in Washington for 1 year at $4.8M and then hope to get a good offer from Lithuania a year later in 2011; or he could take the sure thing and move to Lithuania in 2010.
Maybe EG steps in and helps to convince Songaila by offering him a $1.8M buyout for 2011. Now Songaila is in a win-win position where he can opt out and still gets the same amount of money he was originally owed in 2011, but he also gets the long-term security of the $3M a year contract in Lithuania for the following 3 years.
The Wizards would eat a $1.8M buyout fee, but they would be able to unload Songaila's $4.8M contract a year early, which would save them a total of $3M in cap room, and potentially another $3-6M in luxtax fees.
