I think you guys will appreciate this. We saw Fishbone in Boston last week... great show, with most of the original lineup. Just found out today that somebody filmed most of the show from the front barrier and posted it on youtube...

You can find more videos of the show in the related links. Awesome perspective on a geat show!

Gordon Lightfoot RIP.

I saw him once in concert at Wolf Trap. Not a great show as I remember.

But Lightfoot's impact and influence was considerable.

Tony Rice was a huge influence on me. He loved Lightfoot songs and at one
point released a compilation album of all Lightfoot songs.

This is one of my favs

The handful of Sun Ra shows I saw are among the best live music performances I’ve ever seen. That guy was a radical showman. The movie Space is the Place shows a lot of his personality, philosophy and music theory, couched in a visionary sci fi story and ending in a concert. I think George Clinton got a few cues from him.

Unironically some of the tightest **** ever composed. Music from this era was so catchy because of the limitation of the hardware.

Inspiration for all us old guys on the list. Robyn Hitchcock at 70 years young still kicking ass.

As long as you're taking requests comment on this too then. I know you don't like metal but I'm trying to open your eyes a little. IIRC this won a grammy. And they bought the rights to the movie so they could interlace the music video with it. Do you and me both a favor and smoke one of those huge blunts of yours and then listen to this with headphones on. You spend 3 hours a day ragging on tlkheen so should be no problem. TBH this song is a masterpiece whether you like metal or not.

I don't even really love metal, I just love metallica.

The first few minutes are beautiful but the transition at 4:25 onwards is one of the hardest things I've ever heard. The double bass drums and the guitars imitating machine gun fire. And then Jason Robards coming in with his lines.

Still coming down off the high of being at Bias Studios in Springfield yesterday.
Getting recorded on old 1950s era Neuman mics worth many tens of thousands
of dollars really helps make you sound much better than you might have thought
possible of yourself. Having an engineer that can go in and fix things is cool too.

I'll be playing with Rick Landers tonight (Sat 5/27) at Earp's Ordinary in Fairfax.

We'll be playing at the Folk Fest in Glen Echo next weekend (Sunday IIRC)

The intro, with its repetitive background riff & quasi-lyrical solo line above it, captures me. Then, curiously, it’s the repetitive riff that spawns the melody, out of which the first chorus of lyrics emerges in a self-reflective mode.

At @2:10 the mood picks up; the song acts on the premises of its opening lyric. But, the opening moodiness returns pretty quickly in another reflective moment, this time with an air of hopelessness, the end of everything -- then the music heads off into a kind of, to me, hyped intensity that I do not doubt has a genuine resonance for Metallica’s audience (but doesn’t for me).

In all, the authenticity of the music (the song… the band...) is never in question – it’s real; it’s art.

At the same time, I would never turn to it on my own. But… that’s because it’s not intended for me; it’s not structured – not musically, & certainly not in the lyrics – to “rhyme” with my life, my concerns.

Now, AFM, in return for putting my time into this, you can expect me to post some music of the kind I listen to regularly (one of the kinds, that is, as I listen to a lot of different kinds of music) & ask you to listen to it & write something about it here. Ok?

But… not today.

2 beautiful and happy songs

Also, to me a really important thing is the message a song conveys.
