Asik/Rockets Deal

Postby Nanogeek on Sun Jul 01, 2012 7:51 pm

Can someone explain to me how the Rockets can offer Asik $25.1m over 3 years? As best I can tell, Asik could only get ~$24m from the Rockets. But perhaps I'm missing something.

Max 3 year deal for Asik from HOU is
5
5.225
14.899

It would be like that because he's an Arenas free agent. CHI can match the offer.

Cap hit for HOU would be 8.375, 8.375, 8.375 ..they must have 8.375+ in cap room

Thanks. The cap hit for Chicago though if they matched would be the 5, 5.225 and 14.899 correct? If that is the case then this seems likely a major asymmetry and advantage for the Rockets. If the Bulls think there is any change they will be a luxury tax payer and subject to the more extreme luxury tax penalties then the Asik deal could cost them considerably more in the third year than it would the Rockets. I can't imagine that is an intended result in the CBA. Yet another oversight?

Follow up question. If Asik is matched and kept by Chicago - what is his cap hit if he is traded? is it still 5/15 for the new team? Or is it 8/8 like it would have been for the Rockets?

It should be 5/15. That said, if after one year Chicago traded him I would think that it should fall into Poison Pill Provision, but someone would have to check the exact wording to verify that.

According to Coon's FAQ, under the Arenas Provision, the 3rd year salary "is allowed to be as high as it would have been had the first-year salary not been limited by this rule to the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception."

If not for the Arenas Provision, a team could have given Asik a max deal. For 3 years, this would have started at $12,922,194 and included 4.5% ($581,499) annual raises. The year 3 salary could be no higher than $12,922,194 + $581,499 + $581,499, or $14,085,192.

What am I missing?

You have the wrong "started at" salary like several others have done. Your numbers should start at about 13.67M, plus 2 raises.

12,922,194 was the max for 2011-12, but not for 2012-13.

Thanks. I hadn't seen the $13.67 # anywhere.

That's a jump of 5.8%. Was this pre-negotiated or are all the cap-related numbers going up by a similar %? Also, do Durant's and Rose's first-year salaries jump to some higher #?

If matched, I know that Omer would have to approve any trade in Year 1 and a trade with Houston would be prohibited

However, are there any limitations if the Bulls traded him in Year 2?

Not on where he can go.
