Stretch waive and older contracts

Post#1 » by statsman » Fri Jan 23, 2015 10:18 pm

I know for certain that the contracts of Joe Johnson and David Lee for next season (2015-16) cannot be stretch waived because their contracts were signed and started in 2010 under the previous 2005 CBA.

But what about Durant and Noah? They signed their extensions in the 2010 offseason, but the actual start of their extensions and initial salaries for 2011-12 were based on the 2011 CBA which has the stretch waive option.

I'll save you the effort. Neither Durant nor Noah will get waived.

I realize that, and that wasn't part of my question. I was trying to put together a list of players who *cannot* be stretch waived this coming offseason, not who might be waived.

I believe this next offseason will be the last one where at least one player cannot be stretch waived (two for certain). I was curious who else fell into that category.

The key thing to remember is that only players whose contracts were either signed or extended under the current CBA can be stretched. Since both Noah and Durant signed their contracts under the previous CBA, they cannot be stretched.

Joe Johnson signed his current contract on July 8, 2010. His is the first name that came to mind as a player to put on your list.

That's the part I was trying to resolve. While signed before the start of the current (2011) CBA, the extensions actually weren't finalized until the cap numbers for the 2011-12 season had been released. The cap numbers for 2011-12 were based on the current CBA, not the previous (2005) CBA. I wondered if these fell under the current CBA because of that. You're saying they're still considered under the previous CBA.

Yep. I got him and David Lee.
