Unguaranted contracts (like Dampier)
His 2010 salary is based off incentives that he likely will not acheive causing his salary to be unguaranteed. Can Dallas negotiate a smaller, guaranteed portion (say $4 mil) without extending his contract or offering a new contract?

They can renegotiate the guaranteed amount, but they can't renegotiate the annual salary, thus making renegotiating the guaranteed amount rather pointless.

Okay, I see.
So if I understand correctly, the next question is do we have to renounce him in order to not pay him that big money or can we still retain bird rights to avoid using exceptions to retain him cheaply?

To avoid paying him the big money, he has to be waived. And when you waive someone, you (obviously) lose Bird rights. In the words of Alec Baldwin, it's f*** or walk.
I know you're trying to find a way to keep Damp for less, but that's just not really possible.
