Adam Silver Sends Warning To Players On Opting Out Of CBA

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon May 4, 2015 2:50 am

Adam Silver gave the players a subtle warning on Sunday that opting out of the current labor agreement in 2017 would open up the possibility of the owners trying to go for their preferred changes to system issues.

"There will be things that we're going to bring back to the table, too," said Silver.

Silver was presumably referring to a hard cap, salary rollbacks and perhaps an end to guaranteed contracts.

Michele Roberts has strongly implied, more than once, that the players intend to do opt out.

"And if they do, we'll deal with that," Silver said on NBA Sunday Tip. "There were a lot of things we left on the table [in 2011]. We went into collective bargaining seeking—I don't want to get into it now—but a number of things that we didn't accomplish. And we compromised. And they compromised as well.

"If there's a feeling that we should reopen the collective bargaining agreement…hopefully, just as we have in the past, we'll work through all those issues and there won't be any disruptions in the season."

If either side wants to opt out, they have to give notice by Dec. 15, 2016.

The NBA has never been in a better position financially with their nine-year, $24 billion television deal kicking in.

Under terms of the current labor deal, players are entitled to 51 percent of the new revenue.

Is there any reason there cant be an independent body that mediates the CBA talks? Or maybe even a court? Basically a group not invested in either side that can hear all the arguments and then make a fair decision in the middle. Leaving it upto both sides to figure it out themselves is always so messy. Its like getting prosecution and defence to sit down and determine the sentence for an offence, its just never going to work.

they both gotta agree to that which they won't. only way it gets to that point is if there is a long drawn out battle that kills a season then maybe they get pressured by the government.

Non-guaranteed contracts would be great but players will never let it happen.

Any reason? The fact that neither the owners nor the players association would agree to it would be the main reason.

That seems like a recipe for lose-lose. Nobody really gets what they want Is typically that outcome

In a war of attrition, the Billionaires will have the long-term advantage over the Millionaires.

The losers will be all of the fans.

The value of NBA teams more than doubled after the last CBA.

The players? They make about the same amount of money.

Except they don't. The players' share is determine by revenue.

How is having yet another lockout or strike in the interest of the league, the sport, or the fans?

How is the current CBA in the interest of the players?

The current CBA gives them a fixed percentage of a massively expanding pool of cash (thanks to the new TV deal), guaranteed contracts, a very lax drug-testing regimen (from what I've heard the proposed HGH testing is mostly for show) and a flexible cap which enables teams to pay the top players without having to cut out those lower on the totem pole (who make up the majority of the union's members). Personally, I'd call that a solid deal, if not a perfect one.

Contract length was shortened as well as the players share in revenue.

Over four years the minimum salary has increased 1.8% higher than the rate of inflation while the maximum contract has increased by 3.44%.

In one year the average NBA team has increased from 650 million to 1.1 billion.

Valuation and revenue are two different things. Once the new TV contract kicks in, the players will see pretty substantial raises in salary.

Non guaranteed contracts are bull. There's no reason GM's should get the benefit of dumping their bad decisions while players are forced to live with being underpaid.
“If you're getting stops and you're making threes and the other team's not scoring, that's when you're going to see a huge point difference there,” coach Billy Donovan said.
