Colangelo: James Harden Has Become USA's Leader

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Aug 28, 2014 2:01 pm

James Harden and Anthony Davis are the only holdovers from the 2012 Olympics team that will play for the United States in the World Cup.

“Right now, I think I would look to Harden as that leader,” USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said as his team continues to prepare for the tournament in which the winner earns an automatic berth in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. “Harden is kind of a natural leader and he seems to be willing to accept that role. And you can just kind of feel it and sense. He’s the one.”

Harden's career trajectory changed dramatically after he was traded by the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Houston Rockets.

“It’s so many things these last couple of years that’s been thrown at me, from me being traded, to people talking, just everything,” Harden said. “I try to focus on myself and how can I be a better basketball player. It’s still basketball at the end of the day. I try to do it to the best of my ability and continue to work hard.”

Harden declared himself the best player in the world recently.

“I think everybody feels that way. Every NBA player. Even growing up, growing up youngins have dreams that they want to be the best basketball players in the world,” Harden said. “As a basketball player, or any athlete, you got to have confidence, you’ve got to have confidence the whole time. You just go out there and do your job and have confidence that your abilities are good enough. Whatever is thrown at me, I just try to take it for what it is and just have fun.”

If this guy played better defense I would put him as a Top 10 player right now

Would you rather have Kobe or Harden on your team today?

Much easier to trade Harden.

Well, in that case I guess the answer is neither.

Like has already been said, can he do that for his own team? Because from the sounds of it, he is anything but a leader on Houston...

The interesting thing is through all the scuttlebutt I haven't heard anyone from the Rockets have a problem with Harden's "leadership". Even with his comment about Howard and himself being cornerstones, none of his teammates took offense. Most of them said they understood completely where he was coming from.

Players have talked about how Harden and Howard are basically distant toward the team. It has been reported before that Harden isn't a real team guy. I don't expect anyone on the Rockets staff is going to say he isn't a leader, you just don't have teams doing that kind of stuff and ticking off their star player.

lol the guys seem to love Howard & Harden(they are also always buying gifts for the entire team game consoles, headphones, slippers etc. lol)... you got a link to these claims of being distant?

"Howard said Parsons’ departure wouldn’t affect Houston, and Harden said every Rocket besides himself and Howard was a role player."

He said his comments that James Harden and Dwight Howard do not eat with teammates were clearly jokes in keeping with the sort of radio program in which he was interviewed, but that there were reported in Lithuanian media as if he was serious...

“We never have problems,” Motiejunas said. “For example, last year Dwight invited me and other players to Thanksgiving dinner. James and Dwight bought us give us gifts for Christmas. We go to eat most of the all of the time. I talked with Dwight today. I talk to Dwight all the time. He said he understands. Me and Dwight, we communicate pretty good in the locker room. I never had a problem.

“We hang out all the time. I never got in a fight with anyone. I never got in a word fight with anyone. That’s not nice to take that radio speech like that. I spent like 30 minutes with them. We laughed for 25 minutes. You cannot take it as a serious interview. It doesn’t make any sense.”

Close nit group.

He's the best shooting guard in the league right now, not sure how that doesn't qualify him for top 10 defense be damned.

Idk, could be backpedaling because he realized he was calling them out and he'd have to face them.

At the end of the day though, Harden gives 0 effort on D, he doesn't even try, how can someone who doesn't even try in half of the game become a leader? Not a true leader...
