The second year of the deal will be a team option for the Mavericks.

so he opted out of $25 million to sign a $5 million deal?
Cuban must have promised him something.

Dirk didn't have the option, the mavs did. Last year they had a bunch of cap space, so cuban just gave the money to dirk

The salary cap is just a suggestion. Miami has guys on lifetime contracts in various coaching/development roles like Alonzo. Haslem will be next. Timmy will get the same deal from SAS.

"Cuban will take care of him for the rest of his life"

Unless he's literally in his will what does that even mean? Lol dirk has ALREADY earned 'take care for life' status. He shouldn't have to take 20 mill pay cuts for that.

Why not just retire? He could have been in one of the greatest Hall of Fame class in 2022 or 2023, now he's going into the season hoping not to get injured. Also, why not go out East? The Mavs aren't making it to the playoffs, with the improvement of the T-Wolves, Kings and even the Suns got a little better.

This is salary cap circumvention 101 - Dirk signs for way lower than his market value. And than Cuban who is a billionaire, a VC on shark tank and in the tech industry will give him the wink wink on what companies or stocks to invest his salary in and dirk will cash out for generations. Wouldn't be surprised if some money is being wired to his family and reps in germany that is not on the mavs books. Imagine if Curry and KD did this sign for the vets min - than have some side deal. There should be league mandated arbitration unlike the player/team elected in nhl to weed out and fix these sketchy deals. It does not pass the smell test. Dirk making less than the new mid level (which is the average projected nba salary).

Because he is a Mav for life. It would be weird to see him play another team. It think it's good to see guys like Kobe, Duncan and Dirk play for one team their entire careers. That doesn't happen often enough these days.

He's 39, what are you talking about comparing him to KD and Curry!
This is not the same situation at all. You can compare it to Duncan taking less money at the end of his career to make his team competitive.
Also, Dirk made tons of money and is a king in Dallas, he doesn't need a tip from Cuban to make ends meet.

Wondering same thing. Team option on a low ball contract after years of under market signings? Clearly things are happening behind he scenes that would make better sense of this.

Dirk at some point will become part owner of the Mavs or get a prominent role in the front office. This is widely known and expected around NBA circles. Cuban doesn't fall in love with players often, but when he does, he takes care of them. He's a true professional and Dirk deserves it after all he's given to that franchise. The Mavs would be nothing without that combination.

Umm as someone else pointed out Tim Duncan did this and was a much better player at the time and the dude is 39 so stop talking crap he wants to win.. Durant just did way worse for a guy in his prime not only taking less to sign Iggy and Livingston but taking less to keep his owner from paying more luxury tax you telling me their is not a pay off down the line wink wink for him...?
