Malik Monk Would Like To Stay With Kings

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Apr 23, 2024 1:07 pm

Malik Monk would like to stay with the Sacramento Kings. The Sacramento Kings would like to retain Malik Monk. Unfortunately, the Kings may have to fend off some suitors who can make Monk larger offers in free agency.

Sacramento is limited to re-signing Monk using his Early Bird rights, as they are expected to be an over-the-cap team this summer. That means the Kings can offer Monk a contract that caps out at nearly $78 million over four seasons.

Given his skills as a shooter, scorer and playmaker, and Monk's ability to perform at a high level off the bench, the veteran guard is one of the better free agents this summer. Teams that project to have cap space could give Monk an offer that beats what Sacramento can offer.

But Monk said in a perfect world that he'd "definitely" return to the Kings. Monk emphasized that he knows he can always make more money, but he'll be prioritizing fit this summer. Monk added, "I think it's going to play out the right way."

Monk is happy in Sac after being a journeyman at the beginning of his career. It could likely require a significant overpay to lure him to another team. Please don't bring up tax issues, etc, etc. In the real world players are not declining to sign in states like CA due to tax rates.

4 years, $70 million.

The Kings need to package Huerter, Barnes & 1sts to try and an add a legit 3 and D wing.

I know fit and loyalty are important to fans and all, but he would be nuts to not sign with a team that is willing to overpay. He'll be in his 8th year and has never had a big payday. If he signs a 4 year deal, he won't be on the market again until he's 30. It's not like he's a 22 yr old trying to bet on his own improvement. This is going to be his one and only shot at a big contract.

I agree and a smart agent is beating this into his ears daily if he wants what's best for Malik and themselves financially.
