Rick Spielman: Vikings Will Have To \'Overpay\' To Draft QB

The Minnesota Vikings have the No. 11 and No. 23 overall picks in this month\'s NFL Draft, but they won\'t be in position to draft a potential franchise-changing quarterback.

Rick Spielman, the team\'s former general manager and current CBS analyst, believes the Vikings would have to part ways with a huge haul in order to take a quarterback like J.J. McCarthy.

\"I heard a lot of things that Minnesota thought he had an excellent pro day up there and fits exactly what Kevin O\'Connell wants to do from an offensive standpoint,\" Spielman said on the \'With the First Pick\" podcast. \"But they\'re just not gonna get it with the two first-round picks.

\"They\'re gonna have to throw in their first-round pick in 2025, plus some more draft capital, to do what they have to do to go up and get it.\"

Sam Darnold is currently the Vikings starting quarterback.

It would be a bonehead move. They will have zero direction moving forward. If they’re smart, they draft two promising prospects and tank next year for a qb

I’ll second that.. if they wanted to REALLY be smart they would trade both of their first round picks for multiple first and second round picks and then they would have something worth building off of.

I don't think this year's QB class is all that to begin with. If/when Darnold struggles or gets injured, it might not be a bad idea to see what they have in Jaren Hall next season who they just drafted last year.

Go back to the drawing board in next year's draft.

It depends on how bad they want the player.

What would Minn give up to move to #1.

The draft class the year after that will be incredible though. Suck for 2 years and build up your team outside of the QB position then get your QB in 2026.

Spielman … the one failed year after to year to bring in a franchise QB??? Laughable that he would open his mouth - that ignorant….

Media always has every draft class over hyped … 13 of 67 QB’s selected as the first QB in the draft have started in a Super Bowl. Therefore, about a 16% chance the #1 QB selected this year will start in a Super Bowl in his career.

1. Can they lead?
2. Can they excel on the playground?
3. Can they learn?
