Seventeen-year-old winger Lennart Karl became Bayern Munich\'s youngest Champions League goalscorer Wednesday, netting within five minutes of his first European start in a 4-0 victory over Club Brugge. Karl broke a record previously held by Jamal Musiala at 17 years and 242 days old.
Karl received a pass from Jonathan Tah in midfield, beat defender Brandon Mechele and drove to the box edge before unleashing a swerving left-footed shot. The strike went over goalkeeper Nordin Jackers to give Bayern an early lead at just 4 minutes and 34 seconds.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany expressed concern about the spotlight now facing his young winger following the record-breaking goal. He emphasized the importance of maintaining perspective despite the teenager\'s explosive performance.
\"I\'m not a fan of hype, and now he will be getting some of that. I\'m a fan of training and calm,\" Kompany told broadcaster DAZN. \"His performance today was good. Everyone knows he can score goals and if he keeps going like this, he\'ll get a chance and maybe at the right time he\'ll need a bit of calm.\"
Karl eclipsed Musiala\'s mark by 121 days, with Musiala having scored against Lazio in a round-of-16 match four years ago at 17 years and 363 days. Karl wore the same No. 42 shirt that Musiala donned in that 2021 match.
The goal marked Karl\'s first senior club strike in his 10th Bayern appearance across all competitions. He made his debut at the Club World Cup in June during a 10-0 victory over Auckland City.
Harry Kane scored his 20th goal of the season before Luis Diaz netted his first Champions League goal for Bayern since joining from Liverpool. Nicolas Jackson completed the scoring in the 79th minute.
Bayern joined four other teams with perfect records through three league-stage matches.
