anyone nervous that stan van gundy with full roster control could turn the pistons around quickly? would he go for a quick fix to get back in the playoffs knowing they dont have their pick next year? or would he realize the need to blow up that team and build around drummond?

i hope that van gundy realizes that the only way to really have success in detroit is to blow up that roster, deal with the loss of the pick next year and start to build around drummond, while doing everything he can to get rid of smith and jennings. if van gundy is in for a multiyear project, then that is great news for charlotte. but if he wants a quick fix and wants to get right back to the playoffs next year as a 5-8 seed, then he could probably pull that off, at the expense of the future.

I posted about my concerns about it on the draft picks thread. I've said all along that Im more than willing to trade away the pick in fear that Detroit could get a good coach and GM. Not sure how good of a GM, president, or whatever his label might be, but he is a damn good coach. I say we trade it away draft night if possible.

if stan van takes over the pistons, I dont know if he turn around this team in just one off season but they are going to be greatly improved.

That would be a good coaching hire for them. I'm going to just hope somebody jumps them in the draft lottery and hope we luck into the 9th pick this year. Van Gundy could get them to the playoffs IMO. They won't do anything once they're there, but they could make it. Next year, they probably won't be the total wreck they were this year.

Pistons vs Warriors should be an easy choice. The only problem is east vs west and if the Warriors are capped out talent wise

SVG being both the coach and the president means that he wouldn't have a short window with which to produce results. he could take his time, dismantle that roster and build it from the ground up. that being said, SVG doesnt seem the type to want to undertake a rebuilding project. he could put that team on the treadmill immediately.

what would you do if you were the pistons?

1. i'd try to swing a trade with the celtics with monroe and rondo being the main pieces.
2. move smith to pf (because they are stuck with him, might as well make the most of it)
3. draft mcderrmott
4. sign a free agent wing who can shoot
5. bury jennings on the bench unless he can be traded.

This is why I really want the #9 pick this year. I have a feeling that pick will be 11 or worse in a worse draft.

Roughly 18% chance, surely Charlotte deserves a little lottery luck.

I don't see SVG rebuilding from scratch if he is also the coach. Maybe if he was just the GM.

Rondo
Morrow
McDermott
Smith
Drummond

Celtics would have to agree to it. Many teams with more assets would go ape over Rondo.

So I think you'd see

Jennings
Morrow/Harris
Smith
Monroe
Drummond

Still a very bad team

Trade Greg Monroe to Cleveland for Jarrett Jack & their lottery pick to select James Young

Draft Doug McDermott with Detroit 1st rounder

Sign Trevor Ariza or Luol Deng to start at SF for $6-8 million annually for 2 years max

Add frontcourt depth (unknown who may be available)

PG: Brandon Jennings/Jarrett Jack
SG: James Young/Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

Jennings and Smith are still starting. The rookie won't get the ball and Deng/Ariza likely will stay far far away. Not bad if it worked though.

That's where Stan Van Gundy's coaching system come into play, and the reason why Jack is Jennings' reserve in case he doesn't follow the gameplan to a T

I'd assume Deng, after being traumatized in Cleveland, wants to settle in a prime destination in a battle-tested system like Dallas.

So that leaves Ariza.

Maybe the Hornets will sign Ariza if they can't acquire Hayward.

I would assume that Van Gundy would prefer Ariza's 3-point expertise over Deng's style of play too, so that's why I listed Ariza before Deng as a possibility. Clifford learned #spacing from Stan Van Gundy

Do you think Ariza is a target for Charlotte? i think he could be and he should choose us over Detroit.

Would you trade Gerald Henderson for Brandon Jennings?

Smith is a borderline All-Star when he plays PF (what he will play next season), last season he played PF (last season in ATL) 17.5pt/8.4rb/4.2ast, and Jennings may be a chucker but he had an above average PER, Stan providing some guidance will be huge

Something i didn't know

Last season, Detroit has the 3rd best offense (in terms in points) in the East 101ppg, and had the 2nd worst defense
