2015 Free Agency thread

Post#1 » by Diop » Tue Mar 31, 2015 4:59 am

I thought I might as well make an official free agency target thread as I we have discussed some targets.

Unrestricted free agents I would like to have a go at.

Demarre Carroll - excellent defender with a good 3pt shot. the beauty of MKG being able to defend 1-3's is that we don't have to target a 2 for an upgrade. Demarre has become pretty important to the Hawks so he might be difficult to get

Monroe - If Al leaves, I wouldn't mind having a look at Monroe, similar problems to Al but he can at least play some 4 and is a better passer.

Khris Middleton - I always wanted Middleton but I think he has played his way out of our price range. Would still like him.

Mo or Lin - If we don't resign Mo, I wouldn't mind having a look at Lin. I want a known solid backup.

I'm sure I'm missing plenty. Who should and could we get?

I'm still in pessimist mode, so I just don't expect any big names to come here.

I like Lin as a quality backup for somebody, but he would be a terrible fit for this team. He needs a team that will give him the ball, set a lot of high screens for him, put shooters in the corners and let him attack. I guess, maybe with a 2nd unit that had Biz as the screener and Marvin and PJ in the corners it might work. Although screeners work better when they are a threat to score.

sounds like our starting point guard.

point taken though, highlighted my lack of knowledge of his game. I just want a solid, known quantity backup, not another Roberts.

Unfortunately, Al isn't going nowhere...
I actually like the guy, and sure he is a great locker room guy. But I just can't watch the team play the AlFense no more...

I'd really like a team full of guys that want it every game, playing hard, giving 150% energy every second. MKG, Hendo, Walker, Zeller... That's the mentality I'd like the team to build.

im still curious to see what Al does in the off season. I can see him opting in then working his ass off for his contract year.

unfortunately I think we will resign him if he does that

Middleton and Danny Green are the two guys I would like to look at. Both are good on defense and shoot over 40% from three. A lot of what we can do depends on Al and Hendo. If they opt out I would hope we aim big at a scoring SG.

If Al and Hendo opt in doesn't that mean we aren't going to have any real money to sign FA's? Unless we trade somebody, of course.

If we could afford Middleton and Danny Green that would significantly change the whole look of our starting lineup.

I don't see us going with Biz backed by a rookie center though if Al opts out. I think Monroe is the most likely large signing and he has been a target in the past.

thats why I brought up Carroll, thought he might be the cheaper version. I think he would be as good as Green, easily.

Middleton would be a great signing. If we're lucky enough to have Al opt out or if we can find a way to clear some space, dude is for sure my number one target this offseason.

Also like Danny Green and DeMarre Carroll. I like the upside of Middleton more, but these guys shouldn't be as expensive. Either way, we need shooting in the most obvious way. Would be extremely disappointed if Hendo or Lance is our starting SG next season. Even if we can't get anyone to opt out, trades need to be made.

Danny Green has made 172 threes this season. Our top-two in three-pointers made (Marvin at 87 and Kemba at 78) combined haven't even made as many threes... and he's knocking them down at 41.1%

I would consider Carroll and Green a great haul in FA. Bring in a solid backup center, not Monroe, and work from there. I would rather sign a backup center who has defensive ability that spend money on a lesser clone of Al. Try to bring back Mo and go from there. All this needs Al and Henderson gone to work though.

I'd give PJ the back-up SF next season playing 25 min minimum...

Kemba/Mo/Roberts
MKG/Green/Daniels
Carroll/Hairston/Stephenson
Zeller/Williams/Vonleh
R. Lopez/Biz/WCS

This would be my sort of perfect off-season. I would like to move Williams, Roberts or Lance for sure but I could take them on here if this was the rest of the team. The center spot bothers me some because I am not sure we can afford Lopez with Green and Carroll coming on. Could replace Lopez with McGee at a better cost if we still had WCS in the fold.

There's plenty of cap space for Lopez + Mo + 1 of Green/Carroll/Middleton as long as it's only one of them.

Kemba-Mo
Green-Lance-PJ
MKG-Marvin
Cody-Vonleh
Lopez-WCS

Is Middleton even unrestricted?

Middleton isn't restricted but MIL is not going to let him go.

I'm worried Carroll would be a mistake, he's turning 29 this summer and just posted by far his best 3PT% in a contract year. He has trended up the past few years so maybe his shot would stick around, but I wouldn't bid very high for him, partially because his defensive impact is not impressive (he's a net -4 on D and his DRPM is like 250th in the league) and if he regresses a bit in his shooting I don't think he would be all that useful.

I'd prefer Green, even though I fully expect him to regress once he leaves SA. He's a better defender, he's younger, and he has longer history of solid shooting. I can ignore my natural aversion to bringing on yet another UNC alum because I think he's a smarter choice.

Sorry to ask a dumb question, but how does the QO relate to RFA? Do teams often just make artificially low QOs to get RFA status?
