Raleigh backed out, right? I'd be all over Greensboro though if this happens.

Believe that's correct. Thought I saw that Greenville and Raleigh said thanks but no thanks.

Or, instead, they can invest in an NBL (Aussie Basketball) league and take the best we have to offer while allowing us to see our up & coming hornets :D unlikely, I know!

http://www.atthehive.com/2015/7/2/8883377/columbia-out-of-the-running-for-charlotte-hornets-d-league-team-nba-development-league

Columbia backed out of hosting the team, it's down to Asheville, Charleston, Greensboro and Fayetteville. I think in the end it will probably come down to Greensboro and Charleston.

Fred Whitfield said they want to have the city locked down by the fall, so we should know where the team will be fairly soon. I'm excited about it.

Who are some players you guys would like us to sign to the team for next season?

I will be shocked if it's not Greensboro. They're a fairly large city and growing, they are wanting to add entertainment options (aren't they building a fancy performing arts / concert hall like the DPAC in Durham?), and they don't have serious college basketball getting in the way.

The trend here is for NBA teams to own their own D-League team, or at least have an exclusive/non-shared affiliation. Such a relationship has become a competitive advantage. You have the Rockets using their D-League team to test out risky analytic offenses like the record setting high paced 3's. You had the Knicks using their D-League team to show Lin the D'Antoni offense before having having him take the court.

Things like that wouldn't happen if the NBA team didn't own or had an exclusive affiliation with an D-League team. If the Hornets are sharing the D-league team with other NBA teams, as is currently the case, then they can't dictate what offense is used by the D-League team.

The Hornets need their own D-League team to catch up to the trend already embraced by much of the NBA. Or they risk losing a competitive advantage.

PJ Hairston over Jeff Taylor. At least one can kinda sorta hit threes.

Charlotte used the Bobcats/Hornets 15-man roster as a partial D-League team over the years with generally only about 10 players worthy of a spot in the NBA while the others belonged overseas or in the NBDL

Sixers have been doing the same recently.

This is true. The Sixers organization is a toxic waste

Hard to get training camp invites and prospects without having a @nbadleague team as a landing spot once the season starts.

Hadn't thought of this before, another plus to having your own NBDL team.

Bonnell with the timely, expert analysis that we've come to expect.

Rick Bonnell ‏@rick_bonnell 31m31 minutes ago
Charlotte @hornets set out over the summer to have their own D-League affiliate starting the fall of 2016 (more)...

Rick Bonnell ‏@rick_bonnell 29m29 minutes ago
The Pacers bought the Mad Ants (last unaffiliated D-League team) Wednesday. The days of effectively sharing D-League teams are over.

Rick Bonnell ‏@rick_bonnell 28m28 minutes ago
The Bobcats-Hornets haven't used the D-League much in the past. That could change if affiliate is team-specific and Carolinas-based.

It is a little odd that we haven't heard anything more about a city choice, hopefully an announcement is in the works.

I'm 95% confident the team will be in either Charleston or Greensboro with the latter having the edge due to closer proximity and twice the population size.

Brian Scalabrine on The Starting Lineup, NBA Radio, suggested increasing the NBA Draft to 3 rounds, letting each team draft up to 3 players that can be assigned to their D League Team without their salaries counting against the parent team's cap. I like that idea.

I hope it's in Greensboro so I can boo the Hornet's rookies in person.

From an Asheville Citizen Times article on what the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission is up to:
A discussion was held about presenting a final proposal to the Charlotte Hornets about placing a D league team to play at the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Asheville

Along with city economic development director Sam Powers and U.S. Cellular Center director Chris Corl, VanCamp recently met with Hornets officials about the D League team.

"There were a lot of things they liked about our proposal, but the city does not want to subsidize that effort, so hopefully we can agree on some financial terms," said VanCamp.

The Hornets are expected to make a decision in the next week or two on placing a team somewhere in the state for the 2016-17 season. Fayetteville and Greensboro are also believed to be in the running.
