It's already behind pay-wall. This seriously sucks. **** ESPN.

Seriously, **** ESPN. It's such a dated idea to have someone have to subscribe and log-in every time they want to read an article. So stupid. Post ads like a normal website.

He's going to ESPN, eh? I wonder what made him decide to give up sports journalism.

That would be terrible, their guys would be afraid to contradict Bill Simmons and would be forced to put guys like Malik Monk above Fultz because Simmons saw him more often on tv and just loves him to death.

The Ringer publishes some entertaining content, but it's not about fair and deep analysis. Hell their main basketball guy Kevin O'Connor comes from celticsblog...

It's weird how you used an example from this recent draft where that literally did not happen at all.

I think he decided to cash in. After 14 years he said I'll retire

Good for them! Make that money. They've worked hard to get here.

I remember when he first had a site with Prerak years ago. After that fallout he created DX and now made it to ESPN. Glad to see both keep climbing.

This is terrible news for draftniks like me, but I cant blame him. 14 years of pretty tremendous content, all free of charge. He deserves to cash in.

ESPN is doing all it can to scoop up the Woj's and JohnG's of the world in a futile effort to adapt to the growing amount of excellent alternative content. They will fail. They still cater to the lowest common denominator fan on their primary network, and with all their free online content. They understand that the non-casual fan doesn't need ESPN anymore and they are trying to paywall ransom us into using them.

I remember because I was one of his earliest subscribers, and I'd tell him about Insidehoops, realgm, Prosportsdaily, and he'd create accounts all to try to reach a bigger audience. The amount of effort he put into videos when no one was even watching them speaks to his commitment.

Luck has nothing to do with it. It's all about grind. He didn't start off being able to interview coaches and scouts, he literally was just a high school coach who built his way up.

i was more referencing the quality of the content, i'm sure he's worked hard to build up his brand.

There was one Suns poster that did a bunch of long writeups and did an amazing job. Then there was that guy that did the mock drafts... BW doing the coordination... hmmm... Actually - the Suns forum might be the new DraftExpress.

You sellouts; I turned down all of their numerous six-figure offers because I'm a man of principle.

That podcast really doesn't represent The Ringer's content. Sure, Bill is the guy in charge, but one of his greatest strengths dating back to GRANTLAND was finding and empowering young writers

On his pods, nothing he says its serious. he does minimal research, he's not a stats guy, he's an entertaining guy.

For the written stuff and the sport-specific pods, it's not Simmons-centric Boston homerism

pods where its Kevin o'Connor and Tjarks or a guest, they're fine. i dont agree with them all the time, but you're not supposed to. its part of the process

their main NBA pod with Chris Vernon was an unsubscribe for me. No Zach Lowe from Grantland was painful. chris vernon is a memphis apologist, i can't stand his voice. no idea why the hell he got hired, he doesn't fit the profile of any of the grantland hires

NFL pod with Robery Mays = awesome and funny

MLB pods = i don't follow baseball, i dunno

Wrestling pods with Masked Man = entertaining

Game of Thrones stuff = top notch

Oh jeez, well that was fun while it lasted. Not paying for insider. Did it for awhile and it wasn't worth it for no more often than I used it.

Hopefully someone else can find a way to fill the void he's leaving.

Agree with everything word of this. ESPN has fallen into a very tabloid sort of journalism. It is vapid, trash content and Givony will eventually be brought down to their level by the party line surrounding their corporate culture.

But hey, enjoy those checks while they last, Jon.

Only way to describe this is disappointing.

Congrats to JG- best in the business without question- but since his content will be insider most people are not going to pay for that.

We will likely not be anymore given same treatment to all players, hype to certain prospects and pushing for them, proper breakdown analysis, and this will now become glorified ballmixhopes crap for big network.

It's a good opportunity for someone else out there to replicate what DX did.

Now would be a great time to start 'NBADraftExpress.com' to fill that hole, and maybe eventually get acquired by ESPN in 2-3 years...

I dont know if anyone can. They had legit scouting network. If it does it will take time.
. It's funny, nbadraft.net is actually older but for some reason the site is exactly the same as it was 15 years ago.

When I go there it feels like it is still optimized for dial-up.
