Their superstar is a 6ft guard that's about to turn 28 in the summer. Their time is now, and OG right now is as good a complementary piece as it gets while their window with Brunson is open. There are obviously some concerns with his injury history, but this is the risk you HAVE to take to contend.

Just saying, Siakam is also a free agent

This is very true. New York had 3 players have career years this year - Brunson, Divencenzo and Hartenstein. All 3 are in their late 20's and this is likely the apex of their career arch - especially considering the minutes Thibs plays them.

As long as your holding onto your future draft capital, you can work around a big OG contract. Given his skillset and size, you will be able to move off that contract if need be.

He just plays hard. Its why he's so good. And its why he gets injured.

I don't think less minutes are going to matter that much (to low 30's), except when he's playing 40 plus when already hurt, which isn't smart.

He's going to get paid and if not by the knicks then a slew of other teams will be in line.

I definitely think that there were at least rough salary discussions between the Knicks and OG (or his agent) around the trade. I don't really think it was for a bargain deal but it was something the Knicks could live with.

Of course if the Knicks decide that the injuries have lowered his value and offer noticeably less than what was discussed there could be issues.

100%. He switched his agent to Leon Rose's son. Of course they talked and it was long before he was traded. And its why he was traded. Couldn't make it any more plain that he wanted to go to NY.

If not the Knicks some other team would. He is a valuable role player who can fit into many teams. Expecting near J Grant salary.

He's every nba nerds archetype dream of defensive length, versatility and spot up shooting, but I'd seriously consider whether financial flexibility in a New York market is more important than paying a huge amount for that, which you can fill aspects of that across lesser and cheaper role players.

The consideration really is, how comfortable are the knicks paying him the highest salary on the roster, prior to having to re-up Brunson on a superstar salary after next season, combined with what I think would be a consensus agreement that the Knicks do need a second star alongside Jalen to jump to perennial contender status (I don't think that is happening through shifting Randle).

He's unrestricted and they're pot committed so they'll give it to him, but yes, they should reconsider.

He's the best wing defender in the league and it's not close. It would be ideal if he was more available but it's a Kawhi type situation where the upside of having someone like that on your roster is worth the risk that comes with it.

This is Tibias Harris type situation, OG is much better but Knicks traded away so much for OG that they can't afford let him walk away, it would be a disaster. OG and his agent know this, he will get the max. I wonder if Sixers would offer him the max.

OG played great for this team when healthy, they need to sign him because they aren't going to have the chance to get anyone even remotely close to his level. Their time is now with Brunson and the gang signed, not bringing him back would just be a slap in the face to this Knicks team and fanbase that has fallen in love with this team. OG is the perfect player for Thibs style of basketball, giving up on him because he can't stay healthy is crazy

This team was over worked this year because of injuries to everyone. Now that the Knicks know what they have, they can plan accordingly next year, giving guys more rest, and have a rotation that isn't going 6-7 deep.

Thibs style of coaching may be the worse thing for Anunoby though. They need to keep him in the early 30s minutes wise.

He avg. just under 29mins during his time in Toronto and was still getting injured.

The Knicks didn't trade RJ, Quickley and a future 1st round pick just to let OG walk in free agency. Plus, he switched his agent to Leon Rose's son after the trade.

Needless to say, he's not going anywhere. His injury history is the only concern, but he's still worth what he'll get paid.

that's the general summary of why raptors moved on from FVV, Siakam, OG.....too much money for not enough results (mediocrity).

Never underestimate the Knicks' penchant for giving outrageous contracts to non-all-star players.

Anunoby is a good player, but supremely overrated. He's like the forward version of Jrue Holiday. He could end up being NY's Tobias Harris if NY is not careful.

My guess is Anunoby is going to look around and see what Michael Porter Jr got (~5-years, $180M), what Jerami Grant got (5 years, $160M), and what Andrew Wiggins got (4-years, $108M) and then he is going to tell the Knicks he wants $35M a season.

We don't have a choice, we can't let him walk for nothing.

Anunoby is nothing like Tobias Harris. His problem has always been health not his actual on court impact. He makes a big impact but if he is out it doesn't matter.

Knicks have no choice but to pay him big money with the risk that he’s always injured. It’s becoming more clear why the raptors moved on from him despite him being one of the best role players in the league.

R-DAWG wrote:His contact comps should be Jeremi Grant who signed a 5 year, $160 mm deal entering his age 29 season and Jaden McDaniels who signed a 5-year, $131mm deal entering his age 23 season. OG is in the middle in terms of age (entering his age 27 season) and production - although that is skewed because Grant has been putting up good stats on bad teams the past few years although he hasn’t exactly been durable.

I expect OGs deal to be closer to Grants deal - and NY should try to front load/makw the contract declining. At those numbers, especially if a declining contract, you can always get off the contract. Even with the injuries his combination of size, defensive versatility and shooting are hard to find.

In the new CBA environment, the days of maxing anyone the way Philly did with Tobias Harris are over.

OG is a more impactful player than Grant. Hes way more valuable and much younger. id think Grants contract would be more of a starting point from OGs side of the table. I think the major chip for NY in negotiations is health. Another team can throw money at him, and is likely to. You dont want to sour the guy
