Dirk + LeBron + T-Mac + Felton + Thibodeau to NY 2010.
There's just no other conceivable scenario.

Re: Dirk Opting Out
I don't know much about the CBA, so could someone tell me how this may lead to Dirk staying in Dallas? Or does an opt out pretty much mean he's gone?

and what makes you think, that Dirk will go to Miami, after Wade cursed him? but then again, the only to remove to the curse is to play with Wade.

lol, he opt out for the extension, nothing more.
He wont leave this summer after Cubans commitments to Kidd and Marion last summer. If he had plans to leave then he wouldnt opt out and consider leaving next summer.

The Dallas Mavericks are expecting star forward Dirk Nowitzki to opt out of his contract late next month and become an unrestricted free agent July 1, according to sources close to the situation.
The Mavericks, though, continue to negotiate with Nowitzki on a contract extension in hopes of convincing him to pre-empt his free agency. They remain confident that the leading scorer in franchise history is staying with the only team with which he's ever played, even if Nowitzki winds up joining the most anticipated free-agent class in league history.

Wade and Dirk will make a deadly combo. Can you imagine a pick and roll with those two guys ?

Yes we can, thats why the Mavs fans think that Dallas is a considerable destinaton for James.

Read the article.
Stein tells you why Dirk would opt out, and he also says the Mavs are heavy favorites to resign him.
The Mavs expected this. It doesn't change their plans at all.

Opting out to sign a new deal, for starters, would lock in terms based on the NBA's current collective bargaining agreement through the life of the next contract. Under the league's current system, Nowitzki is eligible for a four-year maximum contract from Dallas worth $96.2 million once he opts out. The most he could receive from another team is a four-year deal worth $93.1 million.
Signing a three-year extension to the last remaining season on his current contract, by contrast, would expose Nowitzki to potential after-the-fact reductions to his annual wage if league owners are successful in their attempts to lower the value of maximum salaries in the next collective bargaining agreement.
Players with max-salary extensions that start in 2011, such as those signed earlier this season by Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol of the Los Angeles Lakers, might be facing unforeseen rollbacks depending on how drastically salaries are reduced in a new CBA.
Another motivation for Nowitzki to opt out as opposed to signing an extension is the ability to secure a no-trade clause in a new contract.
Only players with at least eight years of NBA service time and four seasons with the same team are eligible to have a no-trade clause in their contracts, but such clauses can only be added to new deals. NBA rules prevent major changes, such as adding a no-trade clause, to an existing contract or an extension to a contract, which is largely why Bryant possesses the league's only active no-trade clause.

+1
This is just a way of maximizing his new contract. He gains leverage by becoming a FA rather than remaining in his deal and trying to negotiate an extension.

Hmm in that case, Dirk to Miami could be a strong possibility, nah Jk, but who knows.

So, am I reading this correctly? Only 6 million more?

Dirk is a loyal player and he is very close with Cuban. He's staying with the Mavs.
