Expansion Draft

Post#1 » by vannzee » Tue Oct 5, 2010 4:08 pm

Okay, I know that this is not happening but what if the NBA was expanding by a team, say in a city like Las Vegas, Seattle, St. Louis, ect. What players would be in the expansion draft. I know that it would have happened earlier in the off season but this could still work and be interesting.

I believe when Charlotte came into the league, teams were allowed to protect 8 players. Teams left lesser known players and expensive players unprotected for cap relief.

I like this thread idea.

I'll just do the Lakers for now - they'd protect:

Kobe Bryant
Pau Gasol
Ron Artest
Lamar Odom
Steve Blake
Derek Fisher
Devin Ebanks
Andrew Bynum

That leaves Luke Walton, Derrick Caracter, ShanBROWN!, Matt Barnes, Theo Ratlif and Sasha to be drafted. If they had a choice, they'd hang on to Caracter as the 9th I think.

Bulls protect:
Noah
Rose
Boozer
Taj
Korver
Asik
Watson
Brewer

That leaves:
Deng
Thomas
Bogans
James Johnson
Brian Scalabrine
John Lucas III

I left Deng off because an expansion team wouldn't take the contract anyways.

Raptors protect:
Demar Derozan
Andrea Bargnani
Linas Kleiza
Amir Johnson
Ed Davis
Leandro Barbosa
Jarrett Jack
Sonny Weems

That leaves:
Jose Calderon
Solomon Alabi
David Andersen
Marcus Banks
Reggie Evans
Julian Wright

Considering that they've been unsuccessfully trying to trade Calderon, I'd say they leave him & his contract unprotected.

guys you have to remember that expansion drafts are done before the draft,so no 1 or 2 rounders to select (like ebanks, fields or ed davis) and unrestricted free-agents cant be protected too
Hakan Demirel / Cenk Akyol / Ersan Ilyasova / Semih Erden / Oguz Savas <<< Turkey 2010

Penny / MJ / Pip / C-Webb / Sheed <<< All-Time Line-up

If that would've happened this year, it definitely would've made things interesting. :D

magic protect

dwight howard
jameer nelson
q rich
pietrus
ryan anderson
gortat
redick
orton

leaving malik allen, lewis, carter, duhon, robinson and williams

probably no need to protect vince carter and lewis considering they wouldnt intrest an expansion team and if they take duhon we still have jason williams

Griffin
Kaman
Jordan
Bledsoe
Aminu
Warren

I think that's pretty much who Clippers would for sure keep, not too sure about Davis or Butler or Foye.

Someone try to do Cavs and Raptors

I do not see how it would have made a difference outside of in the most extreme scenario Amare not being on the Knicks - or - the Heat roster minus Chalmers and the rookies being on a team in Las Vegas.

ITT: people not aware of this

So, here's a revised one for the Lakers:

Andrew Bynum
Pau Gasol
Ron Artest
Kobe Bryant
Lamar Odom
Steve Blake
Shannon Brown
Matt Barnes

Unprotected:
Derek Fisher (I think they leave him off knowing full well that an expansion team won't select someone on the very end of their career)
Luke Walton
Theo Ratliff
Sasha Vujacic

Maybe Vujacic gets taken in the draft, just because he has playoff experience (I know, HAHAHA). Walton would actually be a good character pick if he wasn't in a contest with Bynum to see who could sit on the bench with injuries more.

--------------------------------
Here's one for OKC:
Jeff Green
Kevin Durant
James Harden
Russell Westbrook
Serge Ibaka
Eric Maynor
Thabo Sefalosha
Nick Collison

Unprotacted:
Nenad Krstic
Daequan Cook
Mo Pete
Byron Mullens

I think that Krstic might be taken in this draft. Less likely, Cook, but not improbable.

Oh, one other thing... doesn't the expansion team get the 4th pick in the draft as well? I think that the team would've picked DeMarcus Cousins with their pick, so as to have a viable big man to start building around.

The Pistons would protect:
Stuckey
Bynum
Daye
Jerebko
Monroe
Prince-expiring
Wilcox-expiring
Wallace-needs to retire a Piston

Unprotected:
Gordon
Hamilton/White
McGrady/Summers
Villanueva
Maxiell

Maybe Terrico White would be protected rather than Wallace or Wilcox.

After most teams are filled out, I'd be really interested on what people would have for an expansion team from the unprotected guys. The only names I'd see taken so far are guys like Roger Mason, Bill Walker, Julian Wright, Kristic, and Keith Bogans. Ugh.

There's the Bobcats expansion draft:
Lonny Baxter
Bremer, J. R.
Brezec, Primož
Carter, Maurice
Drobnjak, Predrag
Ferguson, Desmond
Fizer, Marcus
Frahm, Richie
Hunter, Brandon
Kapono, Jason
Pachulia, Zaza
Pavlović, Aleksandar
Jamal Sampson
Slay, Tamar
Smith, Theron
Trepagnier, Jeff
Wallace, Gerald
White, Jahidi
Woods, Loren

I think an expansion draft should have a few more rules than it has.

1) A team can lose up to 2 players.
-Say Team X has a full 15 man roster and protect 8, leaving 7 unprotected.

If an expansion team selects one of their player, Team A adds 2 more players to the protected list. This will leave 4 players unprotected from team X.

2) Salary cap of 80% or greater.

3) RFA that are drafted, remain RFA but the expansion team only has 3 days to match an offer.

During the draft lottery and draft
1) Expansion teams should be given a % during the lottery, so potentially they could move up or down.

2) Say there are 2 expansion team(Vancouver, Seattle), they were given draft lottery odds of 6th(Van) and 7th(Sea) best. say the lottery resulted in Vancouver moving down to 7th and Seattle moving up to 3rd.

3) These 2 teams should be given an extra pick in the 1st round (reverse order of original pick, at the end of the 1st round)

4) The 2nd round should start with these 2 teams in reverse order of the previous pick.

5) remainder of the second round should reverse regular season record of previous year, including how Van and Sea did in the lottery(but those two swap spots)

Order would be: worst, 2nd worst, VAN, 3rd worst, 4th worst, 5th worst, SEA, 6th worst and so on.

How the picks would look for SEA and VAN:

1st round
Seattle (1st round, 3rd pick)
Vancouver(1st round, 7th pick)
Vancouver(1st round, 33rd pick)
Seattle(1st round, 34th pick)
2nd round
Seattle(2nd round, 1st pick, 35th overall)
Vancouver(2nd round, 2nd pick, 36th overall)
Vancouver(2nd round, 5th pick, 39th overall)
Seattle(2nd round, 9th pick, 43th overall)
