What's wrong with Orlando

Post#1 » by ropjhk » Sat Nov 13, 2010 12:10 pm

As a change of scenery is often needed on the General board, I propose we do a little analysis on what's ailing the Orlando Magic. They too are another title contender that are starting out slowly out of the gate. Last night they lost to the Toronto Raptors. They are 5-3 with their wins coming mostly against weaker teams (Atlanta excluded).

So I ask: Is there something wrong with the Orlando Magic?

They rely on jump shooting, and when their shooters are off, their entire team is off. Vince Carter was supposed to be the person that could create for himself, but its pretty obvious he can't do that. They don't feed the ball to Howard when their shot is off. Stan Van Gundy runs stupid rotations. Oh and Rashard Lewis' contract is holding them back from making any kind of moves.

Dwight's the only starter who plays defense.

Whats wrong is they rarely cut to the basket no matter how wide the lanes are open. If they would drive to the basket alot more they would be my favorite in the east, but itll never happen with their current group.

Lewis and Carter have regress from the games I've watched. VC stats just don't tell the story. They still are a very good team. Nothing is really wrong to be honest but they do need to think about making a move.

Jump shooting team that relies heavily on their outside shots to fall and when those shots aren't falling they don't really have any players that force the action to the rim to get easy buckets or create easier scoring chances for Howard.

Reasons why I feel Orlando has been more of a pretender than not in the past few years:

1. Their GM made stupid decisions that creates just about zero flexibility while their roster still has glaring holes when it comes to playmaking, creating shots, and perimeter d

2. They don't have a real no. 1 option that can also make plays for others. Dwight's a mental midget thats the biggest whiner of all the NBA stars, questionable IQ, sucks at passing/court vision, sucks at the FT, turnover machine, and with his focus on offense it seems his strengths have fallen - he hasn't been rebounding or defending like he used to, also looks a little chunky but that was probably part of the offseason "get better in the post while also making movies and filming commercials" plan. Dwight can't be your no.1 option likewise with all the other Magic players. Only way Dwight being a no. 1 option will work is through the passing of CP3, D-will, Nash.

3. SVG is a kind of coach the players grow to hate and disrespect and sucks at adjusting to in-game situations and creating offense. Basically an annoying version of Mike Brown.

4. No mental toughness, they desperately need a new coach and some real veteran leadership to rally the troops.

5. Supporting cast is one-dimensional and none of them have a combination of both a high IQ and elite passing/court vision ability

6. Predictable offense, overrated defense , no real toughness or heart

They desperately need a trade for an elite playmaker that can create his own shot but I doubt the Magic have the assets to pull it off.

After watching last night.. their wing guys just aren't producing, minus Pietrus who was money from deep, but that won't happen every game. VC was literally invisible except for a few minutes in the 4th, but it wasn't enough. They have the talent, they just need to bring it. It will come as the season goes on through.. they'll be fine. Really, last night it was Dwight's FT shooting and lack of defensive intensity that shot them in the foot.

Magic fans who trolled about how LeBron would leave Cleveland got their wish. That's their biggest obstacle. After that, they have similar problems that the Cleveland roster had with LeBron and Dwight is no LeBron.

Boston and Cleveland have shown us in recent seasons that the regular season doesn't mean much.

SVG is better, but the problem is Lewis, Carter and Nelson. Lewis is camping out by the 3pt line like he has for a couple of years, and even when he gets a shot he bricks it. Carter forgot how he made his fame in the first place. And as much as I love Nelson, hes not the right PG for Howard. Not unless we have a different primary ball-handler that can get the offense moving and use Nelson off the ball. Other than that, we're good, lol.
