What if a team traded players for the top 5 of two drafts?

Post#1 » by Ming Kong! » Thu May 19, 2011 4:06 pm

Lets say a deep team like the 2003-04 Lakers, rather than breaking up, they traded Shaq for 3 or 4 first round picks, then Kobe for 4, and figured out a way to get 2 or 3 more picks. Not to mention they would suck too the next year. If could manage to get the top 5 picks for two straight years...

Bogut
D.Howard
Deng
Gordon
C.Paul

Okafor
M.Williams
Webster
D.Willams

IR - Livingston

Something like that, ofcourse you can make trades, after the draft or on draft day. But imagine, the kind of team you could make with drafts like the 2003 draft, or 1996 draft. How come no team has ever atleast tried something like this for one draft.

It is too hard to predict. You don't trade a prime shaq or kobe for unknown draft picks. The team with shaq or kobe would be much better the next year so they wouldn't luck out with two top 5 picks from the same team.

Well yes, if you do that and every single pick you make turns into a star of course you look brilliant. But what if you end up with like Okafor and a bunch of scrubs?

So essentially the Spurs should trade Parker, Manu, Tony for like 7 first round draft picks? Probably not a bad idea lol

Well you have to do it when the player's stock is high. These guys couldn't land you the 1st round pick of the worst team in the NBA, let alone multiple picks.

I was concious of how Okafor and Livingston were highly though after. 2 or 3 of these guys could definitely work out. If you could get Howard and Williams (or Paul) to work together, then all you need to surround them with some other key guys.

I might be crazy, but I think I would take Derrick Williams and Brandon Knight instead. A little irrelevant to the subject as it's just 2 top 4 picks. Several teams have done that before.
