I like 2 PG offenses. Granted, they don't always translate to wins, but I've always liked that as an option.

The 97-98 suns had 3 PGs and they were a fun team.

Jason Kidd, Kevin Johnson and Steve Nash, often playing 2 of them on the court at the same time.

and the Jordan Bulls didn't really play a traditional PG system but they shared PG duties with Jordan/Pippen and whoever filled the PG role, but I'm not sure they qualify.

But perhaps the best answer I can think of is the 75-76 Celtics cause they won the title and they had 2 PGs, JoJo White (who played PG but perhaps was better suited as a SG) and Charlie Scott (another PG who liked to shoot). I remember reading articles criticizing that decision cause they'd fight over the ball, but hey, they won. Can't argue with the results.

I hate the Celtics now and I hated losing to them then (I was around in the mid 70s), but looking back, I have a lot of respect for the teams they put together in the 70s, which to me is the golden age of b-ball.
Embiid wanted to win so badly, he deliberately injured Mitchell Robinson.

Classy.

Two point guards

6 championships :)

I meant two STARTING PGs. But to your comment, Phil Jackson's triangle offense teams didn't really need minimum two point guards, or any in the rotation.

Jim O'Brien always tried it with the Pacers. That lineup would have a +/- of -15 in 4 minutes before he decided 3 centers was the way to go.

I'm not sure what the OP means. Historically in the past most teams had 2 PGs in there backcourt. During that time they were referred to as first guard and second guard. Your second guard had all the skills of the first guard just didn't handle it as much. One of the reasons why pace has dropped in the league is teams have only one ball handler in the game. Reality is a lot of 2 guards of the 80s would have been considered point guards today.

Isiah Thomas had Stephon Marbury and Steve Francis together on the Knicks

I think they both were on the court with Nate Robinson once

Has any team ever been successful with two small guards starting / playing heavy minutes together?

Good teams playing 2 pg's always have one with enough size to defend sg's.

George Karl seems to play around with the idea frequently with success with Lawson and Chancey/Felton.

Allen Iverson & Eric snow.

Can't believe noone has mentioned this, they made the finals which constitutes success & both were natural point guards.

I think OP might thinking about the Clippers. I think it will work, because Billups is an elite shooter, has good size and strength, and a once elite, still very good defender. Others already listed the precedents, it can be done.

Since when was Allen Iverson ever a natural point guard? That was maybe his biggest problem. He had a point guard body but was a 2 his whole career.

lol I was being a smart ass. It's mandatory to have at least 2 PGs on the roster.

You could argue they'd be a candidate but only if their team is succesfull first. ;)

Last season combined, they outscored their opposing guards which I consider a win (not their fault if the rest of their team couldn't outplay their opposition). TBH, Curry and Ellis are more like "Combo guards" (can play the point and the 2, have their inadequacies at both positions).

With regard to the Clippers situation, Billups may be actually more of a natural 2 (because of his size and strength) so I think that should work out well for them. I also believe that the "combo guard" is a new trend for NBA backcourts and we're going to see more of this in the future.

Guys like Derrick Rose (and even Westbrook to a degree) are pgs who like to score the ball. The "pure" pgs such as CP3 and Steve Nash I think may be a dying breed in the NBA, everyone likes to score nowadays with the exception of a select few.

It's not "mandatory", it's just stupid to not have 2 PGs. The only thing that's mandatory is the team has at least 13 players on the team. Which positions they play isn't mandatory.
