Why? Durant has a higher rebound rate, a much higher assist rate (more than twice) and then if you want to look at shooting, Durant even has a higher true shooting perentage? Durant plays better D too..
Not sure why you would pick Melo unless you want "most improved" to enter into the equation.
Melo plays D too tbh.
Durant also leads his team to a better winning % on btw, which is crucial.
But I think what gives Melo the edge right now and IF he and the Knicks can continue this throughout the season - is that he's doing it with the Knicks.
Some would disagree, but the fact that he's doing it with such a notoriously losing/dissapointing team, that no one gave them a chance before the season, an 8th seed last year who barely managed to enter the playoffs and were damn near swept in the first round - plays a huge role in why Melo is currently neck&neck with KD for MVP.
I will say that KD never winning the MVP yet plays a huge role aswell on his part - but if both of them continue this form, and more importantly both their teams continue to stay close to eachother in the standings winning the East and West - it'll be a coin flip between them, despite KD stats much more likely to be better.
MVP votes is not black and white, so while I do get what you're saying, it's just not the way it works and we've seen it many times before.
