earl monroe on raising the basket by 6 inches

http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2013/05/20/should-the-basketball-rim-be-raised/with-higher-rims-basketball-would-be-a-better-game
"I think raising the basket at least six inches might prove interesting. A lot of today’s players are so tall that they can just stand under the basket and dunk the ball without even jumping. If the basket were raised, those players would have to jump a little bit to keep their advantage. It would also make the smaller guys have to get up higher to dunk and put a greater emphasis on shooting, especially the mid-range jump shot that has become such a lost art."

Nope. Things are fine as they are. Plus less dunks means less excitement for most fans.

Has anyone ever played street ball somewhere where the hoops are 9ft?

It SIGNIFICANTLY affects your shot. That would be my biggest worry about changing the height of the rim. Most players would still have no problem dunking, but it would severely affect players jump shots.

He does jump a little bit...

And is the league really taller (at the high end) then when The Pearl played, it certainly doesn't seem like it.

No. The average height increase from 1970 to 2000 was maybe one inch.

Earl like alot of old people form their opinions off of myths and not what they see. Theres no way you could actually watch nba games and form any of the conclusions he did.

Average height has been more or less consistent since a few years after the ABA merger. Maybe players are jumping higher, but the idea that we have a bunch of Yao like behemoths roaming the court is false.

 this doesn't make sense at all especially since the league now is trending towards small ball and center play is at an all-time low. Melo and J.R. Booze Fg%'s were bad enough. I can't imagine what they would be if the hoop was set at 10Ft plus, maybe for the dunk contest or a round at least.

The guy held onto the rim when he was done after the dunk standing on the floor.

They should make the ball bigger, a lot bigger, like "Beach Ball" size, that way you wouldn't have to feel so bad if you missed your kid's game.

I can tell you never dunked a basketball before.

He HAD to jump to get the ball over the rim and through the basket. After that he could just grab the rim while standing on the floor. But he can't dunk a basketball without jumping first.

He could probably do it with a tennis ball though.
