If no team had ever relocated...

Post#1 » by Effercon » Wed Apr 9, 2014 7:35 am

Here's what the conferences/divisions would look like.

In parentheses are the current nickname/city of the team, where applicable.

East:

Northeast
Boston Celtics
New Jersey Americans (Brooklyn Nets)
Rochester Royals (Sacramento Kings)
Syracuse Nationals (Philadelphia 76ers)
New York Knicks

Central
Fort Wayne Pistons (Detroit)
Cleveland Cavaliers
Toronto Raptors
Buffalo Braves (Los Angeles Clippers)
Buffalo Bison (Atlanta Hawks)

Southeast
Philadelphia Warriors (Golden State)
Charlotte Hornets (New Orleans Pelicans)
Charlotte Bobcats
Orlando Magic
Miami Heat

West:

Pacific
Vancouver Grizzlies (Memphis)
Seattle Supersonics (Oklahoma City Thunder)
Portland Trail Blazers
San Diego Rockets (Houston)
Phoenix Suns

Northwest
Minnesota Timberwolves
Minneapolis Lakers (Los Angeles)
Milwaukee Bucks
Chicago Bulls
Chicago Packers (Washington Wizards)

Southwest
Dallas Chaparrals (San Antonio Spurs)
Dallas Mavericks
Denver Rockets (Nuggets)
New Orleans Jazz (Utah)
Indiana Pacers

Having seen this, what do you think?

All I can say are the following:

If we look at how the teams are now:

1) The Northeast's a joke
2) HOLY HELL at that Pacific division

Dallas Chaparrals!? Hahaha. I have never heard of that. That's the worst team name I've ever heard, both in sound and in meaning.

Well, the western conference isn't looking that good anymore

Teams like the Bobcats or the Wolves wouldn't even exist if the original team was still there. And no team in LA? Damn.

The Bobcats, Bulls, Wolves and Mavs wouldnt exist if no team ever relocated.

One of the expansion teams probably wouldve gone to LA for sure then.

There is quite a lot of flawed thinking behind judging which team would be good/bad: simple fact is that we don't know as it didn't happen this way.
Vogel is Dutch for Bird.

Funny how the early NBA was so obsessed with establishing teams in upstate NY. I know the area used to be a lot more prosperous than it is now, but it's still funny that at one time or another Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo all had teams.

Bulls and Mavs would've stayed, I think. Chicago and Dallas are big enough.

Braves/Clippers, T-Wolves, and Bobcats, though...

If we use the divisions in my OP as guidelines, then these are some possible options for the then-expansion teams:

Braves/Clippers: Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, 2nd Toronto team
T-Wolves: Utah, Calgary, ...that's about it
Bobcats: Baltimore, Washington, Atlanta, Jacksonville

I think I'll make a thread like this for the other sports, too.

Did not become a present NBA team, so are not counted.
