Gortat to sign with Washington report/rumor

Post#1 » by Laazard » Wed May 7, 2014 5:02 pm

I know it's rumor but I think it's highly reliable. I paste it in polish so you can translate it yourself if you want in the translator.

In short - it's an interview with Gortat's father. Marcin is very close with him so his words are likely to be true. He said that Gortat and Washington management had preliminary talks and they are going to sign 10 million, multi-year contract.

I thought it's worth sharing cause we won't probably have official info until summer and as I said, this info is legitimate.

This goes back to the rumors that the Wizards tried to extend Marcin a few months ago. Always thought Gortat was the more likely to stay over Ariza.

10 million a year would be a steal.

Solid deal for both team and player at 10 million per, but lets see how many years.

It's a good deal. now they should keep Ariza 1 more year until Otto develops his game.

I don't see Gortat settling for 10 million.

If he agrees to 3 years/30mil that would be a GREAT deal. Far better than throwing the max at Greg Monroe

Btw OP, how politically active is Gortat in Poland? Is he very popular?

To be honest - not really. He know politicians, of course, just like any major athlete but he isn't really active in that area. It may be because he's rarely there (one maybe two months a year). However, he claims that he likes politics and in one interview he said that he want to be the president one day. :P

But I can say that he's "publicly active" - he created a foundation that tries to get kids to play bball (as it's not really popular here). Iirc he also works for charity.

Is he popular? Quite so, I guess. He's a major athlete in Poland, our best bball player. I think everyone who is intrested in sports here knows him but outside of that? Not really I guess.

I like Gortat enough, but if I'm signing someone long-term for Washington I'd prefer Ariza. Porter showed me nothing and Webster has been sleep walking through this entire season. I really think Washington's toughness and strong defense really stems from Ariza. To say nothing about his 3point shot being money in the bank and he's a perfect compliment to Wall.

He's a good player, well deserved.

We don't know if Ariza will continue playing with the same toughness and intensity after he gets paid. We know that Gortat will still be a big paint presence, and a skilled p&r finisher who has growing chemistry with our backcourt.

It's funny you say Webster was sleepwalking through the season.. well guess what, he just got paid. How do we know Ariza won't do the same next year? If you're gonna take chances you go with the big man

We might take a step back initially but it'll be better in the long run.

I see, thanks for the insight. I was wondering because I've heard him talk about having political ambitions also. He's said that a benefit of being in Washington DC is that it helps him with his stay in contact with Polish ambassadors and the like.

I wonder if how much that plays into his decision to want to stay in DC over signing with say, Dallas or somewhere else.

Good counter. My one small caveat is that when Ariza regresses to 85% of what he is now (because he'll get paid) he's still a very good player. All-NBA caliber defense and good shooter. During Webster's contract year he was a decent player. During Ariza's contract year he's been the league's premeir 3&D player.

This may be a stretch, but if Washington decides to let Ariza walk, what about going after Wesley Johnson on the cheap? I see him being a 2008 version of Trevor Ariza before Ariza's career really took-off. He came into the league as a potential defensive ace with a sweet stroke. If Wall helps him develop the way he's helped Ariza develop it may work out well.

Remember Gortat is 30 years old and not quite a spring chicken. Will he be as effective at 33? Maybe... I think 3/30 is probably a fair deal. You just wonder how Washington builds on their core which seems to most definitely include Wall/Beal (very young), but who knows who else.
