Every year there's a PG whose the next best thing, so....

Post#1 » by Transistor » Sun Jul 20, 2014 5:03 pm

whose next? (if any). I'm not saying any of the hype is unwarranted but for the past several years, a new PG comes up whose the next best thing. It's currently the most talented and deepest position in the league, but will that continue? Has last year and this year marked the decline in this trend or is it too early to tell?

2008 draft - Derrick Rose went first and won ROTY. He was the next big thing (Westbrook also drafted that year)

2009 draft - non-PG was drafted first, but a PG (Tyreke Evans) wins ROTY and was the next one. Evans fell off a bit but Steph Curry was drafted that year too and then he was it.

2010 draft - John Wall goes first and is the next best thing

2011 draft - Kyrie Irving goes #1 and he's it

2012 draft - Non PG goes first but Damien Lillard steals the show, wins ROTY and he's next in line

2013 draft - Non PG goes first but it's a PG (MCW) who wins ROTY. (might be still too early for this, verdict is still out on this whole draft class)

2014 draft - ???

This year Parker and Wiggins (non-PG's) are getting most of the hype. But will there be a PG in this years draft who will rise to either win ROTY or hyped to be the next best PG? The highest drafted PG's in this years draft was Dante Exum and Marcus Smart. Shabaz Napier is also getting a lot of attention

Putting Napier is a joke. He will be lucky to be a solid bench player. If he was drafted by the Bucks or someone nobody would even know who he is.

I'm going with Exum here..

You should add Payton to this poll, but I'd go with Exum regardless. Dude looks legit this summer.

Elfrid Payton for sure. Aaron Craft may still be a steal if the Warriors grab him, but not next big thing.

Also Exum needs WORK. In summer league he is out of shape, bad turnovers, and can't shoot. He's only 19 but he's rawer than some college guards.

Among those guys I think Marcus Smart ends up as the best PG
Shaq on Duncan:SA won because of TD, a guy I could never break.I could talk trash to Ewing, get in D-Rob's face, get a rise out of Mourning, but when I went at Tim he’d look at me like he was bored and say:“Hey,Shaq, watch this shot right off the glass.”

He led his team to the national championship and win most outstanding player of the tournament so I wouldn't say no one would know him

Will he make it in the league as anything more than a backup? I can't answer that, but anyone who watched the tournament or any college basketball in general knows who shabazz is

is this is a joke? I'm not expecting him to come in and light the world on fire but he can play. No one would know who he is? Didn't he just win Most Outstanding Player and was clearly the best player and MVP on the NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.

http://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2014/07 ... 14-so-far/

UConn vs Kentucky NCAA Championship was most watched basketball game of the year. 5 million more people watched it than watched Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Say what you want about his game but watch the disrespect with the "no one would even know who he is" talk.

If Rondo gets traded, look out for Marcus Smart. Even if Rondo stays, I'm sure Smart will make some noise, but with Rondo out of the way early on, I'd put Smart in my top 3 for ROTY

I understand what you are saying but it's not like he was completely unknown as a 2nd time NCAA champion. He lead that team to chip similarly to the 9th overall pick Kemba Walker.
