Should the NBA raise the age limit to 20 y/o?

Post#1 » by Talent Chaser » Fri Aug 22, 2014 1:39 am

This has been stuck on my mind lately. I think if the NBA raised the age limit it would be extremely beneficial to basketball, parity in the NBA, and help the league as a business. The NCAA would have a better product, players would come into the NBA with a better strength base thus making them more durable, GM's would have a longer amount of time to evaluate prospects before drafting them. It's financially smart for the NBA to let colleges develop their future stars for free, and it's an advantage for prospects to market themselves on the college level for an extra season before leaping to the NBA. What do you think?

Yes and no.

What the NBA should do is get a D-League team for every NBA team and let teams sign under-20 players to minor league contracts.

why would they do that when they can let the college game do that for them

Exposure for the league in cities without teams and better control over player development for teams.

Raptors should still be allowed to draft 19 year olds because drinking age in Toronto is 19

I think any time a multi-million dollar corporation, wants to give you thousands (millions) of dollars you should be allowed to sign with them regardless of age.

They should bring it back to 18. Any adult should be able to play if he's good enough to play. Subsidizing the NCAA is just stupid.

I don't think they should do it like they used to though. You could do things like make guys coming straight out of high school pass some sort of counseling. Make sure that guys who truly need to go to college and won't get drafted actually go and make sure agents aren't screwing with kids' minds. And make the D-League better. Pay them a living wage. Let them be around pro teams, management, vets, etc. instead of boosters and such.

I'd also love to see Hinkie draft an entire lineup of high school to pros guys in one draft.

If you can play, play. Also, why should the NBA be interested in helping the NCAA? For one, the NCAA as we know it will not exist in another decade. Football and money are changing that. The NCAA product can suffer, no one watches it outside of March Madness anyway, and then it's largely for gamblers. Let the NCAA fix itself. It's not the NBA's job to make them better.

The answer is no. A job is a job is a job is a job. If you can show that you're qualified for any job, or can show inordinate potential, then you should be eligible for that job.

Think about how prestigious law firms pluck out the cream of the crop before they even graduate. . .

Imagine if we made any singers wait until they were 19 to sign professional recording deals and instead made them perform for free while the NCAA puts out their albums and makes billions without paying really anything to do it. And then penalize the singers and shame them for accepting a couple grand from someone.

A lot of you are missing my point... Exclude amateurism, would it be beneficial for the NBA AS A BUSINESS?

Blazers fans should know better than most that more time spent in college doesn't somehow make a player less prone to injury. That's just a weird one.

If an 18 year old can dupe an NBA franchise into giving them millions of dollars based on what they might one day become, more power to 'em. GM's aren't under any obligation to draft the Ndudi Ebi's and Robert Swift's of the world.

pretty much this. either raise the age limit or make a better effort to turn the d-league into a real minor league.
1 option is cheaper than the other.

No. They should reduce it to 18 years of age.

The exposure would be limited. Only a handful of people actually care about the d-league, putting paid talent in the group is going to cripple the college game, and for an wayyyy less popular league.
