Stephen Curry Was So Close to Being a Phoenix Sun

Post#1 » by Unbreakable99 » Wed Feb 25, 2015 2:06 am

Very interesting story. Good listen.

@SVPandRussillo: Just how close was Steph Curry to being a Phoenix Sun? @AminESPN told @ryenarussillo earlier. Check it out: http://t.co/4h8FkHBGmy

He was also so close to being a member of the Knicks.

The Sun thing is well-known. Phoenix was going to trade Amare to GS for the pick and take Curry. How was he almost a Knick?

He wasn't close to being a Knick. He just had to fall to the Knicks which he didn't. The deal with Phoenix was already in place. It was a done deal but Golden State decided to keep him.

Curry could have been sent to Milwaukee in the Bogut deal but in true Bucks fashion we demanded Monta Ellis

His agent did whatever he could to get him in NY. He was canceling workouts, ignoring requests, and his dad felt the Knicks were a great fit under D'Antoni (**** coach, lol). Obviously we needed to be one pick higher, but his people did everything they could to get him to NY...so yeah, I'd say he was close to being a member of the Knicks. As close as the Suns? Maybe not, but I'm not listening to the audio because I have a brief to edit...with that said, adios.

I was there :-?

Still worked out for me. Hopped on Warriors' bandwagon basically his rookie year and they've been my second favorite team since.

GS reportedly had Curry #2 overall in the draft. They just didn't think he'd fall to #6 so they made other plans.

They had a provisional deal with Phoenix on the assumption that Curry wouldn't be there at #6 - so Curry was never close to going to Phoenix as the Warriors were only trading the pick if Curry wasn't there. Curry dropping to #6 was the reason the deal was called off.

Similarly, he was never close to going to New York either.

Knicks should've taken Derozan on Jennings anyways

I know Nellie would never have traded Curry for Amare. Never.

Too lazy to follow OP's link but the story I remember was the Warriors and Suns had a handshake deal and the Warriors went back on it when Curry fell past Kahhhhhnnnnn (twice :D ).

Yep, curry was never going to PHX. It was conditional based on Curry not being available at that pick.

I remember watching that draft dumbfounded that Curry fell to us and then equally scared with the rumors that he might be sent to PHX.

You scared the hell out of me with that link. I did not expect a download, and thought, "Oh damn, I just got a virus."

I remember reading about that. It would have been huge for Stephen Curry to work with Phoenix's training staff, that would have really helped his ankle issue. He ended up figuring it out, so all is good, but that move would have really made sense for his career.

Or David Khan could have decided to not be an idiot and just select the pick that literally every Minnesota fan wanted. That would have been cool also.

I think it worked out well for Minnesota

Rubio is a better fit for their personel

I HIGHLY doubt this. Curry was definitely more of a long term piece at the time and it wasn't interchangeable. Lacob wanted to build a team based on size, so they wanted to trade Monta who is an undersized two guard.
