Defensive Player of the Year Thread (2015-16 Pt. 1)

Post#1 » by cyclix » Mon Nov 9, 2015 3:35 pm

Who are the leading candidates thus far?

Looks like LeBron and Kawhi are leading the wings, Draymond Green leading the forwards while Gobert is leading the bigs. Should be a fun season!

I think Whiteside can make a case too.

Gobert, Whiteside, Leonard would be my top 3 so far

Whiteside does nothing but block shots. Too one dimensional to win anything.

Whiteside has looked pedestrian defensively. Seems like he doesn't put the necessary effort to defend at times unless he is getting the ball on offense. Other times he can just be pacing himself, and trying to avoid foul trouble. It's difficult to tell at times, but all in all, I wouldn't put him up as a candidate yet.

Com'on, that's a really lazy and shallow observation at this point.

Andre Drummond took some big steps forward this year... he's not likely to win DPOY yet, but his impact is real. Plus, to a certain degree rebounding is a defensive stat because is prevents the opposing team from getting another chance... Plus, nearly 2 blocks and 2 steals per game and this should be his first season on an all-defensive team.

Iguodala is a good one. Forgot about him. He is actually doing slightly better than Draymond this season.

Yes, Drummond should be in the conversation. 90.7 DRTG with him on the court (updated 11-7-2015) as the rim protector and he's averaging 38 minutes. 110.6 DRTG with him off the court.

I've only seen 1 game - the Wolves game - but Whiteside single-handedly had the Wolves absolutely refusing to shoot anywhere close to the paint while he was in the game. So maybe he does only block shots, but he's pretty damn good at it and it seems to have an effect - Miami is top 5 in the NBA in defensive rating so far.

I would say Gobert is a heavy favorite for this award.

Not to mention right now averaging over 20 rpg and just under 2 stls and 2 blks per game.

Thus far Gobert and Leonard have been really great defensively. Drummond would be third IMO.

Gobert & Drummond.

Gobert is a much better defensive presence, but the award also factors in rebounding. We've seen boxscore stat stuffers win this award who were bad actual defenders, like Marcus Camby.

It's also very rare for a non-center to win this award. Kawhi & Artest were the only non-centers to win this since Gary Payton (I guess KG was technically a PF but he has the size of a center).
