It is not what the people want, it's just a mathematical SNAFU. Meaning the system has an inherente flaw that can lead to anomalies on a regular basis.
Meaning, I can predict that zero percent of people had a combination of Lebron, Melo, and George, but a great majority had 2 of the 3 in their voting, with one post player like Gasol, Bosh, Drumond, but since the SF vote was more cosistant, and the PF/C vote was more erratic, it leads to the least popular combination of players to be selected.
When they eliminated specific positions for generic ones, this was bound to be the outcome. It was inevitable.
Let's face it, fans vote for the "flavor of the season." They vote for their favorite player on their favorite team and whoever the pundits and media are talking about.
None of us have the time to watch more than a couple of games a night. And one of them will usually be our own favorite team or whatever the networks are pushing for the week. So we get our information from the media.
