Probably because they're the Hornets...

Well yes, but there are other places the patter is used around Charlotte. Off the top of my head one of the rides at Carowinds hear Charlotte uses a similar patter in its theming.

http://www.museumofthenewsouth.org/learn/history-resources/charlotte-history-10-things-to-know

Late in the Revolution, British General Cornwallis encountered sharpshooting Patriots at the 1780 Battle of Charlotte and Battle of Kings Mountain nearby. A “hornet’s nest of rebellion,” he called Charlotte. Cornwallis departed, soon to be defeated by General George Washington at Yorktown, ending the War.
The Hornet is used in a lot of different symbols around the area.

It's just a placeholder court for college games. The same honeycomb court is still around, just being spruced up.

Super cool. I love it for them.

I wish that all teams in the league would get on it and add cool touches like this. The Heat have always had a cool scoreboard too.

Cavs' screens are still bigger by a good amount, at 33'x57'. Not sure that's necessarily better, though I've never seen em in person. They are they nba version of the Dallas Cowboys'. Hornets' looks good!

I think I would've preferred everything trimmed down another like 30% or so.

Target Center got new video boards over the Olympic break for the Timberwolves and Lynx.

These big screens are the new trend. Banker's Life has had a big screen for years. From personal experience, I can say I really like them. Banker's Life is a very steep arena. It's great you can grab $12 and $15 tickets to most games, but you'll also be way up there, so the screen helps; especially if you like to pay attention to stat lines.

the Cavs "Humongotron" is still the biggest with the sideline screen dimensions of 31.5 x 56.69, but it looks like the hornets one is of a better video quality.

Kings new scoreboard, expanding almost the length of the court with the main screen at 44'x22' in 4k ultra hd.
