What's the rationale for people putting in John Stockton? He has a good defensive reputation and is one of the GOAT PGs, but I don't know anything arguing he was a top 5 all-time defender at PG.
I also don't think many of these superstars being listed were the best at defense specifically, they were just better all around by far. Even Piston's beloved Isiah Thomas, was not the greatest individual defender.
Jason Kidd could play good defense, CP3 gets a lot of steals, but I think there have been a lot of role players who were better. I'd have to check the numbers but I think backup PGs such as Lindsey Hunter, Delonte West, and Mike James were better than both of those guys (for Mike James, limited to his time with the Pistons before he became a bit dedicated to chucking). Tony Allen, if he could be counted at PG, for sure.
Duncan is already there and Garnett isn't, no need to replace Garnett with DuncanAjohnson85 wrote:Just replace Garnett with Duncan and I agreeFirst Step wrote:Who are the best defensive players to every play the game at each position?
PG: Gary Payton
SG: Michel Jordan
SF: Scottie Pippen
PF: Tim Duncan
C: Bill Russell

How many DPOYs does Pippen have? In my opinion Kawhii is already better defender than Pippen ever was and he's only 25 years old. Not even in his prime yet. That's just scary.

Granted it's hard when you are only picking 5 guys, but any list that doesn't include Pippen is broke. He's the greatest perimeter defender of all time by an extremely wide margin.

I know a lot of people are putting in Russell, but I've never actually seen him play, so I find it difficult to through him on my list personally.
Hakeem, Rodman, Pippen, Jordan, Payton.
What made the Jordan Bulls teams so great especially the teams with the trio of Rodman, Pippen and Jordan was that those three even at the latter stages of their careers, could switch defensively between themselves and hardly lose a beat defensively, and including Harper in the mix. Replace Harper with Payton with was an absolute animal on defense, damn.
And I just think Hakeem was just as much of a freak in terms of athletic ability than Shaq in my opinion. He wasn't the biggest, wasn't the tallest, but he was one of the quickest leapers, had the quickest feet, extremely fast for a big man, and just generally fast and quick overall as there was in a center ever in the game.
I don't see how Rodman is a lock for the list. He wasn't the greatest rim protector to be considered IMO.
