Does Rudy Gobert still deserve DPOY?

Utah is easily been the best defensive team league by far since Rudy came back and Jae Crowder was added, and if he plays the final 14 games which would be 56/82 games played. I'm not saying that isn't a significant amount of time to miss, but he's a lot more impactful than Paul George, Kevin Durant on defense, I don't think it's close.

I think he has easily been the best defensive player this year. To me the only thing that will stop him from getting the award is the amount of games played. But I do think the lack of any other significant defensive standouts may help him. Either than Gobert, i think there is a good group of guys that played really good defense, but not elite defense that we have seen from guys like Gobert, Draymond and Kawhi from the last couple years.

He’s the best defender in the league...but the games thing is hard to argue. That’s just a personal decision.

There isn’t a great candidate this year. I think Embiid is the favorite, and while he’s been great, it doesn’t feel like a home run pick. If there was a year where a guy can win playing 56 games, this is it.

Upon review I think Gobert should get it. There's no clear front-runner and the only knock on Gobert is missed games. He seems to be the standout otherwise and he was deserving last year too. Another thing is that his presence seems to have clear impact. Utah is a winning team with him and a far weaker team without him.

Playing less than 60 games will hurt him, but I don't know how much. It's either Gobert or Embiid.

He unquestionably deserves it, like it is not even close, in my opinion.

Leading candidates besides for him are AD, PG and Embiid IMO... Roberson was in there prior to injury. Embiid has missed a lot of games too, no?

If the Jazz keep winning like they have and make the playoffs, I could see Gobert winning. I think Gobert deserved the award last year as well, so it would be nice to see him win...

Easily.

Shouldn't even be a question IMO.

Where are all those arbitrary games played cut offs for awards that I remember seeing last year?

I think that, how much he improved defence of Utah when he came back from injury will be enough for him to win DPOY.

He's certainly played defence better than anyone else, so in a vacuum that should be a "yes".

On the other hand, even if he plays out the schedule he'll have missed a *third* of the season. That's a lot.

As a huge Utah and Rudy fan, even I'm a bit conflicted. I wouldn't blame people who voted "no".

I'm not tryna see cupcake win DPOY. Feels like another award he snaked.

I wouldn't mind it, he's the most deserving in the games he does play in. However, to this point, the fewest games played by a DPOY winner is 62 (for a full), Gobert will have played in 56 if he doesn't miss another game the rest of the season.

Fwiw using the defensive rating of the team is kinda an unfair stat. The Jazz have a handful of pretty solid defenders playing major minutes.

That being said, I would say it's Goberts award to lose.
Rest in peace Mamba. There'll never be another Kobe.

Well I'd have to go look and find other stats but pretty sure there was a difference with Gobert being out as well on defense.

I get the impression that Embiid is underrated defensively on this board. Gobert is making it awfully close, but I still think Embiid's the favorite. I'll have to see how both teams finish the year. There's nothing easy about it though.

George isn't in the race any longer for me. I don't feel comfortable giving a DPOY to the second best defender on a team. Roberson had a shout before going down.

It's Embiid or Gobert.

Embiid has been fantastic but Gobert is playing at a GOAT level on that end.

Due to sheer brilliance I'd give it Gobert. But I'm happy if it goes to Embiid. Anyone else is simply a bad choice IMO.

I have been at a complete loss on this one for a while. And guys who have NO BUSINESS keep getting dragged into the conversation (ahem KD).

But Embiid is still only at 1700 min. LeBron has played ~40% more (not suggesting LeBron should win). So whether you play fewer games or fewer min, you should be penalized all the same. I think Horford is next up given Boston's success defensively. But I have no idea where this is going...
