Serious: Is Darvin Ham the worst coach in the NBA?

Post#1 » by RRR3 » Thu Mar 16, 2023 6:16 am

The amount of inexcusable losses the Lakers have had this year is incredible. He’s been given a good roster even with LeBron hurt and he’s still underachieving. I know AD was out but to not start Gabriel over a wing like Hachimura when you know the Rockets can’t shoot. To not run zone constantly when you know the Rockets can’t beat a zone….to overplay Schroeder and Beasley and continue with the horrible 3 guard lineups. He’s cost them 10 games this year at minimum. I’m honestly shocked how bad he is.

The Lakers have a good roster??

Before the trade deadline the Lakers had the worst (non-tank) 3-15 roster in the league. They now have a credible amount of NBA depth but nothing special even after adding several rotation guys. I don't know why people keep thinking the Lakers have a ton of talent. Last season was even worse, they were spectacularly crap after LeBron and AD.

They are 9-5 after the deadline and Lebron played in 3 of those 14 games

He wasn't even the worst coach in that Rockets-Lakers game

Stephen A. Smith complains a lot about there being not enough African-American coaches in the NBA.
Darvin Ham looks African-American but I'd never heard of him before, whereas someone famous and with experience like Patrick Ewing never gets a job....

He's not the worst but he's not good either.

he can say hi but hes not in the discussion. he's had a solid history and is coaching a team that should have no expectations (should have, but now im guessing there are hornets fans blaming him for something?)

No, but he was terrible before he got rehired here too. Bad in Orlando too. Below .500 overall record. 5-16 in the playoffs.

He's a bad coach, maybe the worst is stretching it, but he is definitely bottom 5. Of the current head coaches, he has the 6th worst career record. And has coached 2-3X as many games as those on his level, if not more.

Clifford - 708 games, 44% winning
Wes Unseld - 150 games, 44% winning
Bickerstaff - 450 games, 42%
Chauncy - 150 games, 38% winning
Daigneault - 223 games, 35%
Vaughn - 228 games, 35%
Mosely - 150 - 33%
Silas, 223 games, 24%

But is Steve Clifford actually bad at something? Like is he bad at offense, or bad at defense? Or bad at rotations, or his players don't play hard for him....

One of the worst yes absolutely.

People that say otherwise clearly don’t watch much if any Lakers games. Ham is legit as bad as Luke Walton/Byron Scott.

Nah it’s over 121 to 107

Clippers go on a 15-0 run right after this, and eventually win the game.

Why would you put money on a Parlay that involves Lakers winning without AD and LeBron?

There is no coach for that roster, because that roster is NOT a winning team. Pat Bev even said that the problems they have are not basketball related. Meaning there are too many distractions, narratives, or major chemistry issues with that squad. AD seems unhappier than he's ever been in LA, probably sick of losing on this team created by a drunk Rob Pelinka playing pin the tail on the donkey to make roster decisions.

In a fake hypothetical world where Gregg Popovich became the Lakers HC (If he saw this he'd probably order a hit on my life) he couldn't pull that mess together either. I think it's why a lot of bigger head coaches avoided the job. Why have your reputation dragged through the mud when there is nothing you can do to about it? No matter how good the coach is, or how experienced they are, they won't find success in LA.

The unfortunate reality is that the Lakers are starting to remind me of the 03 Wizards, teams built around generational talent riding out the twilight of their careers. They trade their young assets for players that aren't winning factors. Like MJ trading Rip for Stack back in 02, and then Stackhouse declines. At least that trade made sense at the time, unlike the Westbrook trade.

It's been true for a while, but it should be obvious by now: don't hire a former Piston to Coach your NBA team.
