Things can change quickly if the media gets involved. We saw that in last season with the MVP race. Let's see what the odds are currently for DPOY because it was -600 last week........

Yup, -600 to -835 that Rudy Gobert wins.

Who is backing up Wemby when he sits?

Spurs just have no other bigs that are even average defenders. Spurs are a non-serious team and are poor defensively.

You can't win a DPOY without your team being a top 10 defensive team. You'd have to have unbelievable defensive numbers to even win it without your team being top 5.

True. I don’t know who comes in to create this giant gap when people use on-court vs off-court numbers.

Read on Twitter

Defensive Rating
1. Rudy Gobert • MIN 104.3
2. Victor Wembanyama • SAS 106.7
3. Naz Reid • MIN 107.7

… and the Spurs replacement for Wemby is not in the Top 20. Obviously some of Naz numbers are buoyed by playing some minutes with Gobert, but for most of the season, it was KAT and Rudy. Defense is such a team effort, so it’s had to pick any single person out and give him team credit. It will always be a little subjective.

Worse, with this methodology, multiple players could claim #1 Defense over the same 15-game time period. I imagine they are comparing the Wemby numbers (with starters), to the average team defense of all players (including reserves). Pick a different good defensive starter, and you might find others who are also “1 DEF On, #15 DEF Off”

Just not enough games won. Maybe if the Spurs were closer to .500 but 15 games won is way too little. Gobert is on the top of the standings. Wemby will be stockpiling this award soon enough but you can’t give it to him this year.

You can’t win basketball games in the NBA with one brilliant individual defender. That’s such an unfair metric.

Spurs are really about to usher in the next 78-76 era. The next decade is absolutely going to suck for rivals. The kid is so good at defense he spikes blocks to his teammates like Bill Russell used to. But for me it's the no look blocks where he lets a scorer get to the other side of the rim, turns around like he's beat before 360ing and erasing the layup on the weakside. Brutal.

I freaking love Wemby (dah), but I have to say what Gobert is doing is massively impressive.
He's like the captain on defense, sure he's not alone on that very good team, but man his impact is so obvious when wathcing the games live.

Of course, Draymond hates Gobert and doesn't want to see him having another DPOY award

But if there is one season where Gobert deserves it, it's this one. Minny is having a very good season and Gobert as been the master of their defense.
