NBA Message boards in the 80's

Post#1 » by XTC » Tue Mar 26, 2024 6:23 am

They did infact exist. I was on Reddit and found this gem.

https://groups.google.com/g/net.sport.hoops

If you scroll through, it does get quite interesting how people viewed the game and players back then.

Pretty funny here. :D

Even 40 years ago, some folks were still complaining.

Somebody predicted #2 seed Memphis Tigers winning the NC. So close!
They were upset, lost to eventual champ (#8 seed Villanova ) in the Final 4. Who ended up upsetting defending champs, #1 seed Georgetown in the Championship game.

Back in the '80s.
When the West was weak :-D

Only threats to the Showtime Lakers during the '80s majority of the time, were the Nuggets and Rockets. lol

Poor Nuggets fans in those threads. Had to wait 4 more decades for revenge and an NBA title.

Maybe not as impressive as the OP, here are the GB on June 1, 2002

https://web.archive.org/web/20020601193258/http://realgm.com/boards/viewforum.php?forum=6&38791

Too bad we can't click on these threads, and realgm's current database starts from 2008.

Also props to Ostertag for donating a kidney to his dying sister. He played four more seasons after that.

These are cool!

Flashbacks, I used to frequent message boards and chatrooms during the late '90s and '00s at times.

Nice find!

Yes, props to Ostertag!

On that link. many folks were pissed about that 2002 WCF, Kings were jobbed against the Lakers. It was a big thing around the NBA at the time. I do remember that.

Yes, the day after game 6 of WCF, the game that ends with Bibby elbowed by Bryant literally in front of zebras. 3-2 Kings lead.

Yeah! I love these. I wish I could find the thread but I posted a similar usenet one on here (might've been the same link but I think I just found specific posts I found really funny) .. it goes to show how much things never really change and people will always debate/complain about specific things in their era lol

the available tech and rules back then were so different.

we didnt have the benefit of 4K resolution slow mo replay... with the pre-digital TV quality back then, tough to see if the refs called it right or wrong. probably less to gripe about.

Alright, this is gold so allow me to post it as a quote for all to see. This is what people were complaining about in 1985:

Why is the NBA so boring? Except for maybe Boston, Philadelphia, and LA, I
>> doubt whether most of the readers of this note can name 2 starters on any
>> other team. The interest in the NBA is minimal. Most of the people I know
>> (are they the wrong people?) have no idea who's in first, what the divisions
>> are, or even what the team nicknames are. Is that because we don't have a team
>> here in Columbus? or is prevalent throughout the country? So tell me...why
>> isn't the NBA making it?
>> ...bob garmise...at&t bell labs, columbus...
>
>I'll tell you why the NBA is so boring!

> 1. Zone defenses are not allowed --> detracts from defense
> 2. 3-to-make-2 free throws --> thwarts comebacks
> 3. Bad shot selection
> 4. One-on-one play
> 5. 3-point shots --> further encourages bad shot selection
> 6. 24-second clock --> encourages bad shot selection and one-on-one play
> 7. No necessity for coaching, therefore there is none -- it's sandlot bball

> 9. Refs don't call traveling (better this year I've heard)
> --> allows for dunks from mid-court
> 10. 20-second timeouts --> to easy to get out of trap situations
> 11. too many playoff teams --> who cares about the regular season anymore

So, people back then complained about the lack of defense, 3-point shots, refs not calling travels and the RS not mattering anymore.

Sounds familiar?

Thank you for this gem, jkvonny.

Great find! Wow, seems like a trip down memory lane...

Take a look at this:

Finally somebody else who thinks the way I do, I have never been
impressed with Parish. Now that we're on this line of thought,
is anybody impressed with Moses Malone? Almost every game I see
him in he consistantly throws up bricks. I know he's a great
rebounder but when he goes inside and misses everything I wonder
why the sixers give him the ball at all.

Seems like we've got Pharmcat's grandfather posting there, no?

I think he's complaining that someone has the audacity to actually take a 3 point shot which is obviously such a low IQ play 8-)
But yeah otherwise quite familiar I guess

Our friend Scott was baiting and flaming back in October 1985...

Let's all get out the violins and play Roger a sad song.

As far as all this crap about how easy the West is, can someone compile and
post the win/loss record for West vs. East teams for the last couple of
years? Seems to me that would give us some sort of an idea if either
conference was dominant.

Tim Larison tried to warn us about tanking back in August 1985...

I don't think the NBA fixed the lottery so that the Knicks would
get the number one pick. I think word of this would have leaked
out and some teams would have screamed bloody murder. I hope
the NBA has more integrity than to pull a stunt like that.

My complaint is with the whole idea of a draft lottery. As I
understand it, the NBA put in the lottery because the previous
year Houston deliberately tried to lose some games at the end
of the year in order to improve their draft position (and get
a shot at Ralph Sampson). The lottery supposedly would eliminate
this problem because the last seven teams draft position would
be determined solely by chance, not by the team's record.

So what happened? Last season teams like Seattle (in not playing
Jack Sikma) deliberately tailed off
at the end of the year in order to get in the lottery. The problem
of teams sandbagging at the end of the year to improve their
draft position got worse, not better. If you were a general manager
of an NBA team, would you prefer your team to make the last slot
in the playoffs, only to be eliminated quickly by the Lakers or
Celtics, or would you rather have a shot at Patrick Ewing?

I think the NBA should trash the lottery and go back to the old
"worst record picks first" draft order. The Golden States of the
league have enough problems without having to be discriminated
against in the draft, too.

Jerome "IcemanJ" ate crow, the Celtics won the chip that year (1985/1986)...

I have listened to all the bull of how good the Boston Celtics are,
how much this and that about Bird, Mchale can outplay the Lakers in 7.
Well look up dear netters, the LAKERS in 6 and remember it. Maybe 1986
can be the Larry Bird Redemption year? Neat Press.

I would like to note something to all of you Boston lovers. Boston
is not as good as they claim to be. Everytime the Lakers have played
Boston in this series, when Boston won 1, the lakers would kick their
rear ends to win 2 in a row. Boston only lost twice in a row once
during the regular season, and to the Lakers in this series. So lets
give LA their trophy and see you guys next year. How about making
this statement, that LA is twice as good as Boston. The series could
prove that my statement may be totally correct.

To bad Boston fans, it is Pat's and Jerry's turn to light the victory
cigar in the Boston Garden. They just are not as good as LA with talent
or sportmanship. Sulk it up Bird and fans, eat CHOKE seed.
