NBA MVP Discussion Thread 2023-24 (Part 5: So who's winning MVP? )

Post#1 » by bisme37 » Mon Apr 1, 2024 7:53 pm

The season is almost over and the last MVP thread got derailed by an argument over whether RGM mods are allowed to be basketball fans (or something), so I figured I'd make a final poll to see who we officially think should and/or will win MVP.

Vote for 2: who you think SHOULD win MVP and who you think WILL win MVP. If it's the same player in your mind, vote for him twice.

We're down to the wire so I only included the Top 5 vote getters from the previous poll. Apologies to those who prefer another candidate but I think it's time to narrow down the field.

Have fun and please don't get personal with each other or derail the thread, thanks.

You can view results of the previous poll here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2355172

SAS has SGA as MVP and Edwards/Brunson battling for 3rd...

Post#2 » by Handlez » Mon Apr 1, 2024 8:00 pm

Also, if I'm not mistaken, he voted for Embiid to win MVP the last two seasons and also left Luka off the ALL NBA teams last year? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyhow, I know a lot of what these people say is garbage to drive up ratings, but it shouldn't leave the fraudulent shows and carry over to actual voting for important awards that effect pay and legacy.

If SAS and others want to troll for ratings to entertain or piss off people that watch this garbage, that's fine, but a line has to be drawn when you actually have a vote that can help or hurt legacies and pay. I personally never watch it, but a snippet popped up on Mavs Reddit and I saw it.

I think the poll makes sense but let me know if it's confusing. Vote for who you think should win MVP and who you predict will win MVP. If that's the same player, vote for him twice.

I had 10 poll options to work with and wanted to ask the two different questions, so I was only able to include the Top 5 vote getters from the previous poll. Which probably annoys a few people but imo it was time to narrow down the field anyway.

Why did you move my thread into this one?

It's egregious SAS has a vote.

If the Mavs win out, and Luka keeps putting up these numbers, he will have a very strong case IMO.

Sadly, this will be the last contested MVP race, once the young, tall and lanky kid starts getting the minutes and reps he deserves, it' over.
Bol Bol is coming and there's no stopping it.

It's egregious, it's blasphemous, it's undermining the sanctity of the game we love
- in SAS voice

MVP is voted on by media, it's an imperfect award but even a guy like SAS has only small part on the vote. I wouldn't worry.

I'm shocked people actually believe Wemby will be an MVP candidate anytime soon.

I'll be sick if he's denied MVP if they win out.

The argument against Shai is that OKC has been one of the healthiest teams in the league. I believe Jaylen Williams missed like 6 games this season, which is the most among their starters.

Despite the health luck, they're only 1/2 game ahead of Nuggets, who missed Murray for 20 games (and he'll end up missing the rest of the regular season, most likely).

Kyrie missed like 20+ games for the Mavs.

Khris Middleton missed 25 games for the Bucks.

Had there been more separation between OKC and the rest of the teams to reflect the health of their team, he would have a stronger case.

Joker should
Joker will

SGA picked the wrong year to have a major breakout year for he and team.
Tatum deserves some love because his team is so good, but he's also hurt because his teammates are so good.
Luka hurt by all the injuries the first half of the season. His team just isn't going to have the record despite the silly numbers.

I didn't merge your thread just for the record. But I understand why another mod did since your post was about the MVP race we're talking about in this thread.

Jokic won MVP in 21-22 season over Embiid on a team that won 48 games.

Mavs should win 51 games so it isn't out of realm of possibility for Luka to win MVP over Jokic.

Nah full season, 48-34

The other MVP was a shortened season though Nuggets were on 53 win pace that season.

Nothing eye popping as a team, nothing better than this Dallas team.

It's going to come down to narrative a bit. Give Jokic his 3rd after the chip or give Luka his first.

Is it just me or does everyone wish the MVP award included what players did/do in the playoffs as well?

This is how I view it.

Embiid was the clear frontrunner before injury. After he got injured it was Jokic/SGA. Luka has made a strong push near the end, but there is Jokic his play has never dropped off.

Jokic is my MVP right now.

I'm still debating if Luka or SGA come in 2nd. I guess the rest of the season will determine that.

Not that similar.

Jokic won 3 less games than Embiid (I think he won more games of ones they actually played in), with his #2 and #3 basically missing the whole season. He played 6 more games than Embiid, and also swept him in analytics.

Denver currently has 7 more wins than Dallas, Murray has missed as much time as Kyrie, Luka has more missed games than Jokic, and Jokic still has a clear advantage in most analytics.

That team was ass. I am surprised that Nuggets had 40 let alone 48 wins. This Dallas team is so much better than that team. Not really getting the comparison
