Why do players goaltend?

Post#1 » by Taiwan Killa » Wed Feb 6, 2008 6:26 am

When the play stops for a foul or whatever and the player with the ball just puts up a shot for the heck of it why does someone near the basket goaltend it or pull it down just for the heck of it? I don't get that, why do players do that?

YOU SCORE ON MY TERMS

It's part of the psychological domination aspect of the game. Don't let shots get near the rim. They generally don't actively try to goaltend it though.

Well it's not scoring though it's like on a deadball when a player just shoots to keep warm or whatever.

Like say the Lakers are playing the Blazers, Fisher is driving but then Odom gets a technical foul so play is stopped. Fisher shoots it up for no reason. Aldridge grabs the ball right before it touches the rim.

Why did Aldridge do that?

They also do it so the player doesn't get into a shooting rhythm...

KG does it ALL the time and I HATE IT!

When the Kings played the T-Wolves a few years ago in the playoffs, Bibby faked out KG and then threw the ball into him as he went up to reject the shot. It was hilarious :D

Psychology, when you think about making a swish you are more likely to make your next shots

I guess its a way to stop a player from getting hot, so he doesnt know if it was gonna go in or not.

I do it all the time... when I'm playing 1v1 on my Nerf hoop that hangs over my door. It's a sign of dominance and power. *swat* Not in my room!

I think a lot of it is just reflexive action. Not a lot of thought takes place prior to the goaltend.

yea the main reason is because you gain confidence with ever shot made. shooters know this and if they swish this shot they feel like theyre on fire. esp players lik dirk or kobe. so you dont want to allow your opponent to get hot from a shot that doesnt count.

This is the real reason, but I can't STAND when guys do that. It really started to become more and more prevalent the 6-8 years or so. It's a punk move imo -- if you winning the game is dependent on whether some dude makes a shot after the play is whistled dead, you don't deserve to win anyway.

It's psychological warfare. Shooters know that nothing will be easy. In the Sacto-Minn series KG goaltended everything until webber took it personally and stuffed one.

Everything in the game is about a psychological edge. It's all about competing.

I have no problem with it.

Because a lot of NBA players are stupid and think they can intimidate other players with it.
