Can Dirk Nowitzki ever win a Championship as a #1

Post#1 » by Harry10 » Sun Sep 13, 2009 11:53 am

Dirk wasn't able to get it done with a side kick like Nash. does Dirk have any hope of winning a Championship as a #1, or is his only chance is to become a #2 like Gasol?

He needs a big time low post player. If Kidd and Marion were in their primes, they would be a championship contender and Dirk would still be putting up 27ppg as the number one option.

Certainly think it's possible. He possesses all the qualities of a championship number one guy, just that he isn't surrounded by the right pieces and he's playing against quality competition.

Yes he is, he just needs a guy like Iverson or Pierce or Vince on the team and not Josh Howard.

I just don't think you can survive the entire playoffs based around a jump shooter. Sooner or later it's going to let you down. Without a strong inside presence or man to break down D's on penetration I doubt he ever wins one.

Sure, but winning a championship is extremely hard and plenty of terrific players on terrific teams have never won any.

It's too late. He had his chance already and they blew it. From this point on, he'll never win another as a #1 option unless he has 2 other All Stars with him (kinda like when he had Nash and Finley but with a better supporting cast).

Teaming up with LeBron eliminates him from being the #1 option so that kinda defeats the main topic of the thread.

Dirk isn't just a jump shooter, and even then he is an excellent one. In addition he has always been able to get to the line fairly well. Dallas did go to the finals with Dirk as their #1 option and they beat good teams on their way there. So there's nothing that says Dirk isn't capable of beating high level competition in the playoffs as the first option.

I don't really think he needs an offensive interior presence. If they have a decent enough defensive presence inside and a slasher on the team like you said, a team with Dirk as the leader can do a lot of damage.

Dirk will not win as a #1 player on a team.

He's very good, but he can't be any better than a #2 on a championship team.

I would think that signals to you that I'm saying No he cannot win as the first option.

I think having a really good second option is the main reason the Mavs didn't win in 06. Josh Howard and Jason Terry were a) not super-effective after Game 2 and b) HORRENDOUSLY un-clutch.

Dirk has the talent, he showed that in getting them to the Finals in the first place (and going through the reigning-champion Spurs to do it in a really tough series), but when your team fails around you, there's only so much you can do. Naturally, Dirk didn't step up hardcore after Game 2 either, but sometimes you don't shoot well (Jordan didn't look so hot in the 96 Finals, for example) and it happens. Dirk's lack of a really good second guy hurt him pretty badly.

Cuban wouldn't even blink at paying that team's salary.
