If you love the NBA (Bill Simmons Book)

Post#1 » by DowJones » Tue Oct 27, 2009 8:23 pm

If you love the NBA then you have to get Bill's new book. It just came out today and I bought it at a Barnes and Noble. It is loaded with information, all-time player rankings, and everything else that is NBA-related. It is just $14.50 if you follow this link. Again, it is really a must-read for all of us NBA fans on this forum. If you like reading Bill's columns on the NBA, you will LOVE the book.

Yeah, I got the book. Haven't cracked it open yet, but I'm sure I will sometime this week.

Simmons is great when he isn't talking about the Celtics, Patriots, or Red Sox.

I want to read it, but then I remembered I don't read books, so I'm pretty torn.

The appropriate advice for somone who loves the NBA would be "ignore Simmon's book" since he knows jack about basketball.

Simmons is great when he isn't talking about sports.

The NBA books I like to read are by the players themselves.
Lakers are 22-3 in OT last 6 seasons:Kobe best OT closer!

I hate reading books by players...they are all the same.

This Simmons book is really good. The more I read, the more I can't put it down.

I liked all the excerpts. Bill Simmons is horrible at predicting the future, but sometimes he's pretty on point about the past. Sometimes.

I'm going to get it this weekend. To me its ideal. Its a way to get a look back at NBA's past and present in a lighthearted, not overly serious tone. I don't need boring player life stories or romanticized look backs to player 40 years ago that I couldn't care less about. The excerpt of the Kareem deal and the NBA/ABA merger was a great example of learning about a situation and how it might be viewed today.

Anybody who says this hasn't actually read his columns. He knows more about the NBA and its history than 99% of RealGM.

Sorry, I've read his columns. They're good for Karate Kid references and gambling stories, not basketball insight. Unless you count calling out Isiah Thomas as a poor GM(wow, revolutionary) and stroking Daryl Morey as being special basketball insight.

And its history? I don't really count putting a personal (generally homerish) spin on famous events shows any particular understanding of history, but hey, you keep worshipping at the alter of Simmons.

I think you are taking Simmons the wrong way and way too seriously. The guy writes in the perspective of a fan, and doesn't hide it, he looks at things homerish in terms of people he likes and teams he likes, but does it in an entertaining way. His approach is like most fans, we think we're smarter than the GM's in the leauge, as does he. O and he got me watching the Wire, which might just be the best drama I have ever watched. (I just watched the first season so far). But Bill if you read this, stop talking about the Karate Kid, I was 2 when that came out, and no I don't plan on watching it.

Where else are you going to find a book that has chapters about meeting isiah at a topless pool? His excerpt about Bill walton was fantastic and I've read lots of people on here say he didnt deserve MVP that year, but Simmons explains why he deserved it almost flawlessly. The Ewing chapter was basic I admit.
