In.

We're a LOT better off with quality vs. quantity on this. If, for instance, tsherkin, DoctorMJ, and The_Secret_Weapon don't participate, we're losing about 50% of the brainpower of RealGM. On an all-time list, you have to have some people who have actually seen older players play (i.e. posters over 40). I don't mean to be rude about it and I'm not referring to anyone in particular--but I've seen this happen before. Having a lot of people that are kinda smart is a lot less desirable than a few people that really know what they're talking about and can discuss it clearly, thoroughly, and thoughtfully.

Also--and I say this knowing some people are going to be pissed--there's going to be very little movement or change in the top, say, 25-30 players. (Or at least there should be very little movement.) At the top 15-20 level, for instance, it's very hard to move up more than a player or two at a time unless you have an epic season or two. (Like...winning a couple of titles/MVPs.) Some people may have been listed a little too high or low last time, but--and again, I realize this will infuriate people--guys like Kobe and KG really can't have moved up more than maybe 3 or 4 places since the last poll. If they had had a year like Magic/Bird/MJ/Shaq/Duncan in winning titles and MVPs in the same year, it might be (a little bit) more. But that hasn't happened.

While I am flattered by the effusive praise of TrueLAFan, I am unlikely to be able to participate if this gets off the ground in the near future. Post-August, that's something else, but right now, I'm doing the 55+ hours a week work thing, moving into a new apartment and all that jazz-tap. If you can hold out a wee while longer, I would be plenty happy to participate.

Baller approached me about this on MSN, so I stickied the topic.

If you want to start like September 1st, I'm totally into getting involved.

There wasn't a lot of movement in the top 20 in the last two times this happened, probably won't be now, but with You and I on here, True, there will still be support for the Bobby Jones/Sidney Moncriefs of the world in the top 100 so I'm good.

I have no problem with that, its up to the rest of the guys that are in, and the ones that will join.

I'm interested. I tried to initiate this a few times in the past half-year or so, but nothing happened. I guess the STICKY really helps.

I agree with this, though I'm not sure if anyone will be upset about it. I think the top 100 is fun way to pass the off-season, as well as triggering great discussion and learning opportunities - it shouldn't be seen as yet another way to jock Kobe or KG or whatever current player is your favorite. Assuming it runs like the last Top 100, I think the rankings will be fairly realistic. In alot of ways, the 50-100 is more interesting (and certainly more difficult) than 1-50. I think it's pretty clear that the top 20-30 players are essentially consensus, and are just interchanged up or down a few slots depending on preference. The latter half of the top 50, and 50-100 is where it gets real interesting. And difficult, did I mention difficult? How about trying to balance the respective cases of Alonzo Mourning, Kevin Johnson, Chet Walker, and Wes Unseld (just to name the first 4 relatively equal players that came to mind).

As far as quality over quantity, I agree there as well. Problem is.... someone has to decide who is in. I have a low profile on this board, so I won't be offended to be discluded. I'd rather be left out than have to be the one who decides WHO is left out. Enough of the heavy hitters have signed on already, and I'm sure the rest will follow shortly so hopefully it will even itself out.

I also think we should wait till September so Tsherkin can participate (easily one of the best posters on this site).

You can count on me to be involved. I certainly agree with True La Fan in that there shouldnt be a huge movement but I can certainly see some movement. Whats interesting is that a player like Wade who has not done much in 2 yrs could realy move down as much as a player like Pierce has moved up.

Whats very important is that the OP needs to sit down and decide the criteria and then write it out in detail. We need the ground rules before we start and not to make it up as we go. If you want to research the last list and refresh those rules thats ok as well.

tsherkin

I would certainly want you to be involved especialy in the 35-60 player range. That may be a few weeks away and certainly give you a chance to get involved.

Suggestion: votes count over. If say Wilt wins nr 1 overall with 5 votes, but Jordan got 4 votes there, IMO he should start out with 4 votes when we vote for nr 2 overall.

I see, that does make things easier, I'll let you guys decide the rules, since its not really a one person thing. So when we feel that we have enough number of judges you guys can give ideas about the rules that should placed.

I wanted to check out the rules from the last list, but that thread is nowhere to be found since the forum update, unless a mod can find it, we are going to have to create some new rules, or use the same ones if anyone knows which ones we used last time :-?
