Most Defensively Clutch player in the L?

Post#1 » by rrravenred » Fri Dec 17, 2010 6:39 am

Watching Andrew Bogut singlehandedly keep the Bucks in the game against the Spurs with absolutely startling defence in the last quarter the other night, I'm wondering who else has that sort of clutch defensive impact in the league.

Please note, I'm not trying to pimp Bogut here, just asking the RealGM commentariat who has the ability to dominate a game at key moments using their defensive skill and ability. Everyone loves the player who makes the shot, but when that player misses, I don't know if there's enough love being given to the man who makes that shot miss.

Thoughts? Who do you want on your team when the other team has the ball in those tiny moments on which games, seasons and championships turn?

Wade has a shout for end of game defensive highlights - some pretty clutch plays that stick in my mind. One's I've found on YT are:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02zXy54p7UA - steals for the game winner
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pr0Mt4S-maY - blocks Brook Lopez
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=od3Z46t3 ... re=related - rejects TP twice
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0z9DqOosj24 - blocks VC end of game
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQAoxj6yIZc - kills VC end of game
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujgX3IlUFGo - blocks that soft finisher Amar'e to close qtr
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98zAs6sS ... re=related - blocks Mike James <1m to go
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ad4TXGeF ... re=related - blocks Stuckey in final second to win.
He may not be the best lock-down defender all game but he sure knows how to do some impressive stuff when it counts.
There is no consolation prize. Winning is everything.

I'd have to go with Kobe for the players at the 1-3 spots. For one possession, no one is better. I could agree with Wade too though. He sure gets alot "game-winning" plays on that end.

But if the other teams best player has the ball in a isolation design for the game winning shot attempt, Kobe is the man that has to guard him.

Overall, I don't know. But for the 1-3 spots it's close between Wade and Kobe.

LMFAO..why Kobe?

Do you guys ever notice that it's Ron Artest who guards the opposing teams best player? Not Kobe..? And it was Ariza before that...

Chris Paul and KG, no homer. Lil man rips everyone down the stretch.

Do you realize that it is Kobe, not Artest or Ariza who has been focal point of the offense. Today, at their best, Kobe is the better defender.

Good offense beats good defense. Nobody can be a defensively clutch player. In this case, The offensive player is a choker.

Kevin Garnett is the guy to have...Dwight Howard is a close 2nd.

Kobe's the best defensively when you're aiming to lose.

Perimeter is definitely Wade - guy has a knack for coming up with big defensive plays down the stretch.

Not that it makes my point, but I remember two steals Paul got on Wade when Wade was coming down to try and tie up or take a lead in the closing seconds.

Paul shouldn't be guarding Wade down teh stretch anyway though... flawed ass team =/

clutch stats on defense:

Manu 7.3 rebs, 0.5 blk, 3.6 stls, countless charges
LeBron 15.9 rebs, 3.2 blks, 3.2 stls
Wade 6.3 rebs, 2.7 blks, 2.3 stls

Kobe 7.3 rebs, 0 blks, 1.8 stls meaning 'not even in the same class'

my vote is Manu because stats underrepresent his impact... he's one of the most underrated defenders in the league.

but none of them has impact resembling big's defense. this is gotta be either KG or Dwight. I'd rather have Howard at this point.

I would vote for Ginobili among guards. Homer vote goes to Rondo, but he genuinely does has some pretty important steals in the playoffs including a couple game winning, clinching steals/ (read insane gambles that worked) against the Lakers, and Kobe specifically.

Perimeter has to be Wade. He has so many game-winning blocks/steals and plays some good defense in the last few minutes.
