Is Westbrook what OJ Mayo was supposed to be?
OJ Mayo was supposed to be a monster. People were hyping him as the next Kobe. Do you think Mayo was supposed to have similar, probably less assists and more scoring.

Lebron made it to the finals with that cleveland team.
Bird would have won 4 rings with that team, in this weak ass era of basketball.

Oh yea and no Mayo was supposed to be a big time scorer, and I still feel that he will be eventually. Just needs to find the right situation.
Russ is a PG he is supposed to have more assists than Mayo.

Just going to point out that I've been a Westbrook fanboy since weeks before that draft and a Mayo doubter for a couple of years now.

Those Kobe comparisons were quickly put to rest after a few seasons. I really hope Chicago gets him to possibly revitalize his young career. But I think that they are two completely different players. Mayo was always a jump shooter, Westbrook is the complete opposite.

Actually.... I think Eric Gordon this year is what Mayo was supposed to be.

If any Realgm poster was president we'd all be dead. They label bust on rookies after half a season, 15 games into the season make or break a team. OJ been in the league for like what 3 years? Give him some time, he will be just fine.

i agree with the Eric Gordon comparison.

Yeah, current Eric Gordon is it, or a prime Ray Allen.

Wow. I NEVER thought he'd be as good as a prime Allen.
But I did think he'd be putting up Gordon's numbers this year.
As somebody said in an earlier post... Mayo really isnt THAT athletic. I'd say that Kobe RIGHT NOW is more athletic than Mayo.
Ellis & Gordon are far more athletic than him as well.

A lot of people don't realize how short he is, watching the game he is almost the exact same height as Monta Ellis w/o the elite athleticism

O.J. Mayo gets seriously underrated

I dunno why the hell people ever mentioned his name with Kobe's.
He doesnt have a FRACTION of the talent and athleticism of a young Kobe.
Roy with good knees sounds a bit better.
Its too early to write Mayo off though. He can still become a top 10 SG and have a few 22-24 PPG seasons. But Kobe he'll never be in the same UNIVERSE as.... simply because of Kobe's freak athleticism which Mayo will never posses.

Re: Is Westbrook what OJ Mayo was supposed to be?
I never understood the hype about Mayo. I think people get too caught up in the fact that he was so highly thought of as a youngster. Players develop differently. If I remember, Mayo was always old for his level in grade/high school, probably to give him an advantage in all the recruiting rankings.
I look at his game and don't see a single elite skill. Don't misinterpret that as saying he doesn't have skills, because he does. He just strikes me as a solid all-around player. He's an average athlete. He's a good shooter, but has never been a great one. His playmaking is average.
I think he'll be a solid starter for a bunch of years, but I don't see any star qualities in the guy.

I know I didn't. I thought, when he was all hyped up in HS, he was a legit 6'5.

Oh now I see where your first post was going.
Kobe agenda even in this thread.
SMH.
Brandon Roy with good knees was on his way to being a truly great player.
And for what it's worth I never really thought he would be as good as Ray Allen, but it's what he was "supposed to be" based on hype.
