He is also 8th in the league at opponents FG% at the rim, when filtering for players with atleast 7 attempts made against them per game :

1. Roy Hibbert : 38.9% (9.0 attempts per game)

2. Dwight Howard : 39.5% (9.6 attempts per game)

3. Omer Asik : 40.8% (8.9 attempts per game)

4. Robin Lopez : 41.3% (8.7 attempts per game)

5. Pau Gasol : 42.1% (12.1 attempts per game)

6. Andrew Bogut : 42.2% (7.5 attempts per ger game)

7. Serge Ibaka : 42.9% (8.5 attempts per game)

8. DeMarcus Cousins : 43.6% (8.4 attempts per game)

9. Tim Duncan : 44.7% (9.4 attempts per game)

10. Andre Drummond : 46.2% (8.0 attempts per game)

-----------

Let's hope the "Plays only 1 side of the floor" label will vanish like the "headcase cancer" label is starting to since the season started.

His defensive numbers are among the best in the league, and knock a guy who many consider as DPOY candidate in Anthony Davis out of the water in almost every aspect beside sheer total of blocks per game.

It's time people start giving him credit as a defensive player and stop repeating those labels everyone had on him as gospel without actually watching him perform.

The Kings are the 12th most efficient defense in the league, without making any major moves or changes on that end from last year (were 22nd last season), holding opponents to the 8th lowest FG% in the league - And DeMarcus is the most important piece in that defense anchoring them whenever he's on the floor (and the you can see the direct dropoff defensively whenever he is not)

Now all he needs is to stop the foul trouble and get up to 35-36 MPG.

Yeah, I know.

Man oh man, if he does though, his #s would be insane if he averaged those minutes.

His per 36 for ppg & rpg is 26.5 ppg & 14.1 rpg

Those #s, more or less, are the same in reality if you look at the games where Cousins averages at least 35 or 36 min/g in his game logs from the past couple of years.

I again don't think people realize just how enormous Cousins' numbers are per 36 min. So he's at 26.5pts 14.1reb per 36?

Just ran a bball-ref search for all players in NBA history who have averaged 26+pts 14+reb per 36 in a season. here were the results by decade:

10s-- DeMarcus Cousins (in progress)
00s-- nobody
90s-- nobody
80s-- nobody
70s-- Kareem (1970-71)
60s-- Wilt (5 times), Baylor (2 times), Petit, Bellamy
50s-- Petit

None of the great 90s centers ever did it. Not even Shaq. Moses never did it. Basically producing such thudding numbers is a relic of a much faster paced past before many/most of us were even born. Its certainly HOF only territory.

His defense is agressive though

Tell him to quit being so agressive there and he that could fall off

He does need to cut the loose ball fouls though, cuz he gets in to that many times

His problem is just his frustration fouls.

He makes atleast 1-2 fouls per game on reaching from behind when the player is in his own half looking to advance the ball.

If he cuts that down and just runs back, he'll be at around 3.5 per game imo which is fine.

If you look at his bref numbers, Cousins' average of all of his FGA's distance is 6.7 feet. That is the lowest average distance in his career. This means he is playing much closer to the basket and putting up much better (closer) shots. Almost half his shots are within 0-3 feet, which he is converting at a 72% rate! :o

His perimeter J has taken a dip in terms of %s (last year: 42.3%; this year: 31.7%). If he regresses back to his typical %s from that range, I could see his overall FG/efficiency in general go up a level...again. Same goes with his 3-10 feet shots too. His %s dipped too this year. Again, if he manages to improve those shots back to his typical rate, I wouldn't be surprised his TS% rises to the low-60% range & his FG% rises to mid/high 50s.

Cousins is really a scoring dominant player.

I think the most encouraging thing about his improvement is that his biggest issue (fouls and turnovers) are very correctable issues, that definitely will get better with age and experience.

The Kings are the only team that hasn't had an above-average defense in the last eight seasons. They're average now, and their starting lineup has been the best defensive unit that has played at least 75 minutes, having held opponents under 40 percent shooting in eight of its 12 games. All other Kings lineups have allowed 110 points per 100 possessions.

but but but Cousins is a ZERO on defense!1!

seriously though, this is not surprising if you guys manage to catch Kings games. Their starting 5 is a very good defensive unit held by Cousins as the anchor (& Collison's stellar perimeter D). Then, you have a very serviceable defensive player in Thompson, BMac's vastly improved D & Rudy's typical D effort. All of those 5 players are doing their bit.

Williams, Cousins named Players of the Week

Cousins led the Kings to a 2-1 week and paced the league in rebounding (16.3). He averaged 25.7 points (second in the league) on .577 shooting (30-for-52) and tallied five blocks. On Nov. 22, he recorded his sixth consecutive double-double with 31 points and 18 rebounds, matching his season high, in a 113-101 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

For some reason, Cousins has taken a dip in FG% in 2 areas: 16 ft to <3-pt & 3 to <10 ft shots.

2015:

16 ft to <3-pt: .317
3 to <10 ft shots: .306

2014:

16 ft to <3-pt: .423
3 to <10 ft shots: .389

I did the math and if Cousins were to regress back to his typical % rate from those areas (assuming his 72% at 0-3 ft shots remains the same), he would be shooting at 56.19% from the field! :o

His TS% would be 62.25% :o

In turn, his PER increases as well. From 27.7 PER to ???

Therefore, there is a (good) chance that Cousins' FG% rises even more from it is now (52% FG). I think it is a matter of time that his jumper gets up to speed.

Seriously I hope people who visit this thread read and memorize this the next time they're about to talk about DeMarcus's defense.

I don't have much hope for this one as far as the national narrative of him, cause it is extremely hard to make those talking bubble-head guys change their pre-planned speach about a player when it comes to actual ability on the court and what he can/can't do.

Let's hope the perception on this forum atleast changes, I think DeMarcus earned that much.

Great game, he completely controlled it w/ his offense. They were never in trouble and they did it w/o Gay and Collison too. Dmc is big time i really think he helps his teammates more than Davis does, definitely on offense.
