PC Board OT thread

Post#1 » by ardee » Tue Jul 22, 2014 5:33 pm

There was one of these on the soccer board, so I'm hoping the mods are ok with this. I think we have a great community of guys here who share a common love of this beautiful sport, and it'd be cool to get to know some of the other posters better.

I know RealGM has an OT board, but I thought this would be cool, since it would be in the context of our PC Board community.

I must admit I'm curious as to what some of you guys do. I can start: studying for a BS in Economics in California, so still a little while until I enter the real world.

Originally from the extremely overpopulated mess of India, got into basketball when the first game I watched was Fisher's 0.4 game winner. I've spent good chunks of time working with autistic kids and teaching computer science at my old high school whenever I'm back.

Spent most of my basketball youth in the Kobe-Odom and then Kobe-Odom-Gasol era, so I have some real affection for these guys. Been to exactly four live NBA games (Nets-Bobcats '09, Lakers-OKC in the '12 Playoffs, 'Clips-Heat last year and Clips-Pistons last year).

Also grew up hating soccer, as it was far more popular than basketball in India and my friends used to laugh at my basketball obsession. Started watching in the PL '09-'10 season, fell in love with Arsenal's passing game. Both of my teams have been dominant at some point or another 8-) even while the other really sucks.

Also majorly into bodybuilding, used to just mess around in the gym but now I discovered Starting Strength and my lifts are shooting up in the last few months (200 bench, 275 squat, for those who are wondering)

Nice to meet you, ardee.

I'm from England. I'm a buyer for the University of Oxford, I run tenders / negotiate contracts for all major IT purchases.

Only got into basketball through video games (one of the early NBA Live games IIRC) - but obviously knew about MJ & Shaq before then. Started to support Miami in the early Shaq/Wade era but only really got to follow the NBA more closely with online streaming around 2009 or so (whevever I joined RGM)

My first love is motorsports, I raced karts for many years. I now race a Porsche 944 :) (me:)

And I like football (soccer) a bit and support Chelsea.

I'm currently an attorney, born and raised in Miami, graduated from University of Miami Law in 2011. Baseball is the sport that I grew up with mostly. Family on my Dad's side is from Chicago and a HUGE baseball family, and my family from my mother's side is from Cuba, also hugely into baseball. I played baseball when I was younger, and followed the Marlins religiously with my brother when they started.

I always liked basketball growing up, would play it occasionally, and Alonzo Mourning was my second favorite athlete as a kid (Jeff Conine of the Marlins was my favorite as a kid, haha). But with a lack of TV and not a lot of people in my family interested in basketball, I never majorly got into it growing up. But when Wade came on the scene, and especially in '06 when we won the title, I absolutely fell in love with basketball, and Wade's game in particular. Kind of hard to explain what Wade personifies to this city, I know lots of people who feel the same way. It's best expressed by that phrase that you will hear from Heat fans often, that Wade "is" Miami.

It was actually in Law school that I started to more consistently play the game. It's probably the sport I most enjoy playing right now.

Lukekarts, that's an awesome video. I have an '05 cooper S which I have begun to modify with the hopes of getting into events like that. It looks like so much fun. How do you like the Porsche 944? In the future, I was considering getting one of those as a next project car.

He came to my elementary school in '97 (5th grade), I happened to be walking the hallway when I ran into him followed by a camera crew (he was doing some special appearance for the 1st graders). Anyways, I didn't know much about him at the time and when he saw me he actually stopped the whole crew and talked to me for a couple of minutes. Don't even remember exactly what he said, pretty much generic "player meeting a kid fan" stuff. From the brief moment I met him, he seemed like a really cool and genuine guy. By the way he went about it, made me a huge fan of his from that day on. I actually started to watch baseball (only used to care about basketball before then).

Nonetheless about 6 months later the Marlins won the World Series, with Conine a key contributor. Now, I'm not saying the goodwill he earned from my kid self had anything to do with that, but I'm not saying otherwise either...hah

(Interesting fact, Jeff Conine was the only player who was on both Marlins championship teams)

I'm a retired attorney from the DC area, now I teach Social Studies in a school where I was the first employee in Fort Lauderdale area. We focus on special needs kids with a lot of autistic students ad we could use a good tech ed teacher, ardee!

Always played driveway basketball from the time I could walk but always pretty much sucked. Thus got into arguing about it instead; particularly now that I can't play much anymore.

Thanks :) I'm obviously somewhat biased, but I really love it. As standard (211 hp) the engine leaves a bit to be desired, but with a new exhaust, ECU, bypassing the air mass meter and upgrading the injectors we have it running at 235 hp / 235 lb torque. I don't know what prices or upgrades are like outside of the UK, but over here they're fairly inexpensive and there's a lot of specialists available to work on them.

Interestingly, I used to have a Cooper S road car and loved it, but I definitely prefer the handling of the Porsche. It's really balanced and most of my relative gains on other cars are through corner speed and consistency.

I drive this:

Spoiler:

Jealous?

Im a 40 year old guy back in college. Dropped out the first time around to tour with a ska band. Made almost no money but great experience I wouldn't take back. Then played online poker professionally for a long time--like printing money for several years before the games got tougher prior to Black Friday. If you think the math guys here are hard-core, you have no idea. I learned the math because it got to where you had to, but was more of a "feel" player.

As far as basketball goes, have long loved it and played it. Was never a star, but always managed to get serious playtime as a defensive specialist. Am long and was quick. Now Im a screen setter with a decent set shot and I gobble up rebounds. My greatest moment in basketball was getting absolutely run over and dunked on by Kenyon Martin in a pickup game where not only did I end up on my butt under the basket but ended up with a broken nose and much mockery....

That's sounds like a fun life :D what instrument did you play? What's your major right now?

I've played 3 on 3 with Pau for like two possessions. He was visiting the city I live in and held an open practice at a local court. Kept rolling subs, so pretty much everyone got a chance to play. I never touched the ball but he set a screen for me, the handler just jacked up a shot though

When I was a kid my dad gave me a Dr. J video...think of it as a precursor to Jordan's "Come fly with me" but with more of an instructional bent. Dr. J was 6-6. My next favorite player Ron Harper was 6-6. My dad was 6-3 with huge hands/feet, and everyone knows that sons outgrow their dads, right? So I was GOING to be 6-6 and play in the NBA. Destiny.

Only...when I got to high school I was still only 5-4. I had the hands and feet, but I was one of the shortest kids in class (my high school history teacher Mr. Simon made fun of me, saying I looked like a capital L). Plus, kids where I'm from are stupidly athletic...Roach could dunk when I met him in 5th grade, Lump and Dre Hut were 6-6 + by junior high. The Blanton twins were built like LeBron James in high school. So, long story short, my hoops dream didn't pan out.

Instead, I ran track. 110 meter high hurdles (which is pretty funny considering how short I was when I started hurdling). Eventually I grew, though...didn't make 6-6, but had a spurt between sophomore and junior year that dropped my times 2 seconds. Ended up walking on to the team in college and lettered at 2 different D1 schools, which was cool.

These days I'm a dad and a sportswriter, and in my free time I'm a biomedical engineer.

Back in the spring of 2004 I was a 17-year old bored junior (soon to be senior) in high school living in a small town in North Carolina when I was introduced to this website through a video game message board I used to frequent. After months of lurking I finally registered an account...where I promptly continued to lurk, only posting things infrequently if it related to the former Charlotte Hornets glory years.

Today, I am a 27-year old auditor living in the Raleigh-Durham area. I went to UNC for undergrad and grad school and have no intention of leaving the area. I am the world's worst basketball player, as any of my friends will tell you. Despite my lack of athleticism, I am a good tennis player and I do cross fit and run 5 days a week. While I love the NBA, my true sports are MLB (go Cardinals!!!) and college sports (Tar Heels!). Honestly, my interest in the NBA would have died out a long time ago if it wasn't for Real GM...I wish there was a site that was this active and awesome for baseball and football!
So when is this plane going down? I'll ride it til' it hits the ground!

Ah yes, Mark Rippetoe's program...I did Starting Strength for about 9 months. My PB is still 265 for bench, 315 deadlift, and 285 squat). Sadly, an ankle injury from a volleyball game and a broken shoulder from ultimate frisbee keeps me from ever achieving my PB again :( .

Starting Strength is good for beginners. Once you're doing with Starting Strength, look into Louie Simmons' Westside Barbell training.

I just turned 21. Studying Economics/Econometrics as well, just on the other side of the nation.

I'm in my early 20's ... trying to get some sort of NBA related job, and am pretty good friends with Steph Curry.

I've been lucky enough to attend quite a bit of NBA games courtside, most recently, Phoenix @ Boston this year

Playing with Pau would be a blast--seems like a really chill guy. Kenyon was not fun to play with at all.

I played trumpet(and occasionally trombone) and did some rapping(please don't laugh).

Major is pre-Law, but I don't plan to go to law school but go into Mediation. And if you want a good laugh at Chuck I didn't pay close enough attention when registering for this summer session so instead of having 8am and 10am classes I have 10am and 8PM classes which is the worst and kinda causes problems with work since I live in Dallas but work for a company based in Hawaii. Only 4 weeks tho...

265 bench :o man that's crazy upper body strength compared to your other two.

Actually I'm running Babylover's variant of SS, feel like the original doesn't have enough pull movements, recipe for rotator cuff injuries.. I was going to move onto Upper-Lower when I felt I maxed out SS, I'll check out Westside though, thanks man.

Sucks about the injuries... I've basically stopped playing other sports because if I got injured and had to stop lifting I'd go absolutely insane. Pretty much an addict :noway: :noway:
