Protect a lead - what is your best 5 man unit to get stops

Post#1 » by giordunk » Sat Oct 18, 2014 7:02 am

Suppose you are up 20 heading into the 4th quarter and want to protect your lead. What's your 5 man line up to get the most stops? Consider rebounding as well, because a defensive possession ends with a defensive rebound.

Defensive matchups

PG - Lance Stephenson
SG - Andre Iguodala
SF - Kawhi Leonard
PF - Anthony Davis
C - Dwight Howard

would probably be my choice, although it is tough to choose between him and Noah.

I pick Lance because of his great size, high motor, and rebounding ability. IMO he can keep up with most PGs and when a point guard gets by him I have two prolific shot blockers inside.

Iguodala was chosen for defensive versatility, probably most complete perimeter defender in the NBA IMO. Kawhi Leonard is chosen as the primary LeBron/Durant stopper because of his length.

Down low I think Anthony Davis is an easy choice at power forward because of his length. Then Dwight Howard I think has a higher defensive ceiling than Joakim Noah, and putting him in a system with other solid defenders would really help IMO.

Part of crunch time defense is having quick rotations, being able to draw offensive fouls, not jumping on pump fakes, and be able to switch when defending the P&R.

Iggy
Lebron
Ibaka
Howard

I was debating whether to put Lebron at PF and Kawhi at SF but I think the rim protection of Ibaka and Howard eliminates the option to drive to the basket.

Avery Bradley and Tony Allen full court pressure killing the shot clock. The front court almost doesn't even matter but I would go with Lebron, Taj and Noah
