He just dropped 37 in one quarter and BARELY broke 50. I think that should really put into perspective how amazing the 50 point achievement is and how absolutely mind blowing Wilt's record is.
“If you're getting stops and you're making threes and the other team's not scoring, that's when you're going to see a huge point difference there,” coach Billy Donovan said.

Completely mindblowing. Shame I missed it. Easily the greatest offensive quarter I remember

Meh. Gervin put up 33 in a quarter without a 3 point line in 1978. Klay scored 37 that included 9 three pointers. If the 3 pointer didn't exist today you'd have to subtract 9 points. 37 minus 9 equals 28. Just saying.

Find Gervin's shot chart, see how many long 2's that would be 3's in today's game and factor them in. Pretty sure Klay still wins. Get with the times, can't live in the past forever, Gramps.

Gervin didn't take that many long 2's because those were bad shots. They'd be bad shots today as well if the 3 didn't exist. Just giving a little perspective. No need to get defensive.

Nice try Grandpa Waiters, Gervin wasn't hitting 30 foot bombs with a 133% TS, take your trolling to another thread.

Nobody was hitting 30 ft bombs in 1978 because there was no benefit for taking that shot. If the 3 didn't exist today Klay wouldn't have taken those shots either. Perspective dude.

Perspective? How about Gervin doing that in the final game of th regular seson. Spurs locked in 2nd seed against the last seeded Nets. Losing the game 132-153 (the league point average was 108). Gervin needed 58 points to overcome David Thompson (not related) who scored 73 earlier. It was all about lets give the scoring title to Gervin and we don't care if we lose by 50.

High pace, hardly any defensive effort...

Yes. Just because Gervin didn't have a 3 point line doesn't mean he would have done anything with it. Long range wasn't his game anyways.

You've got it backwards my friend. Gervin scored 33 points without a 3 point line. Klay scored 37 points with a 3 point line. The question isn't what Gervin would have done with a 3 point line (because we'll never know) the question is what would Klay have done without it....and the answer is score 28 points, 5 shy of the record. I'm not saying one feat is more or less impressive than the other, I'm just trying to qualify it. That's it.

NBA HOFer Johnny Kerr quoted in Terry Pluto's Loose Balls:

(Gervin said to Kerr), "Why don't they use the 3-point shot more?"
I said, "Coach Biandhi doesn't think it's a good percentage shot unless we're behind at the end of the game."
George said, "Suppose you could make 15 of 20."
I said, "George, that's a really long shot."
. . .
He went behind the 3ppoint line and started shooting. He took shot after shot and swish after swish. Then he said, "That's 18 out of 20."
I said, "Hey, George, let's go make sure that the ink is dry on your contract."

It just shows how era biased the current generation is. How high will Thompson land in GOAT player rankings for an admittedly great 3pt shooter?

A 3point highlight reel isn't impressive. 9-9 from three is amazing and to have it in a quarter is crazy.
