Peak Hill vs Peak Truth

Two of the greatest small forwards ever. Who do you got?

'97 Grant Hill

21/7/9/2/1 on .56 TS%, 25.5 PER, .223 WS/48, 8.0 BPM, 7.9 VORP

'06 Paul Pierce

27/5/7/1/0 on .58 TS%, 23.6 PER, .178 WS/48, 4.3 BPM, 4.9 VORP

PS: '02 Pierce works aswell.

Two of my favorite players of all-time, so I have to chime in.

I would give Hill the edge, but it's close. Biggest difference is Hill's playmaking. Both were very good scorers (edge Pierce due to a far superior 3-ball and better post game), rebounders for their position (edge Hill), above average/good defenders (not sure who was better, it's very close, well maybe '02 Pierce over any version of Hill, defensively - I thought Truth deserved some serious All-Defensive 2nd team consideration in '02, and he was stellar defensively, even more so, in the playoffs that year), but Hill was a much more natural playmaker, more of a point forward.

I'd go with '97 and '00 Hill over any version of Pierce (as someone who watched vast majority of Pierce's games in his prime, I like '02 as his overall peak, taking offense, defense, RS and playoffs into account).

I've pretty much always had Hill over Pierce, but I've never thought about Hill in the context of the post season where he wasn't all that hot.

In the 97 playoffs, he put up 23 points on 49 TS%. Hill's bread and butter which is his passing took a big dip also, only about 5.5 APG on 4 turnovers.

Pierce, even pre big 3 era where he didn't have a lot of help put up better scoring numbers and his shooting provides a lot of utility. I'm starting to lean that Pierce might be slightly better.
