Top 150+ GOAT (Peak, Prime, Longevity, Award)

I’m finally done this project. I have finished compiling my GOAT list based on the four criteria (Peak, Prime, Longevity, Award) that I will explain below.

Each of the criteria will regularize to a weight percentage, therefore the GOAT formula become a simple.

GOAT = (Peak x 20%) + (Prime x 35%) + (Longevity x 10%) + (Award x 35%)

Let start off with Peak. Peak is the value of a player regular season + postseason greatest production in a given year. I used the 4 main advance stats (PER, TS%, WS48, OBPM, DBPM) to obtain my result. I would have prefer RAPM but with the lack of data from earlier year, it's impossible to compile, especially for 1960s player; however I did used the best judgment to make it possible that I would note below in asterisk.

The list below is used to normalize to an equal value weight. These are NBA leaders on average from 1960-2016. Each stat is assign with a PT Value of 30. The PT value then is used to to obtain the STD Value which used to multiply with the respective 4 advance stats mentioned above.

So PERstd = 1.058, WS48std = 111.384, TS%std = 48.510, OBPMstd = 4.046, DBPMstd = 5.577

RoundPlay Coefficient is used to credit player for advancing the next round because the further you advance, the less likely your PS Value becomes an anomaly . 1.2x is used instead of 1.1x to obtain better result especially for someone who play 1st Round vs FInal Round. Final value should be must higher.

Note: *1950-1960s players, as you know, stat are incomplete, especially their OBPM and DBPM. In order to regularize them, I have to adjust. For instance, Wilt is probably great offensively and defensively, so he will get the full credit for the OBPMstd and DBPMstd. Bill Russell is an average offensive player so his OBPMstd value is divided in half and full credit for DBPMstd. West and Oscar are probably average defensively, so they also get a 1/2 of DBPMstd but full of OBPMstd.

Next is a 7-years PRIME that is carefully chosen so that player are given their productive prime. Injury seasons that player missed majority of the games will not be used. Playoff would be omit as we are more concern with player regular production in their 7-years prime season. As you are probably aware, current player prime is still unfinished so their rank may not be accurate.

I like these lists (only when they pass the eye test) because they allow us to better evaluate current players given how people are very hesitant to give current players too much credit because "their careers aren't over yet". Those players are often subsequently underrated.

I do have a question for you though. What made you decide on the following weighting?

Was it simply a matter of "this combination passes the eye test the best" or did you have some other method?

It's interesting that these formulas posters are creating continue to have Wade as a top 15-20 player in all of prime, longevity and career. All i kept hearing was how his longevity was crappy and that he had a very short prime. Anyhow i'm not all into using formulas as a strict basis for ranking players, although the results have been pretty good with some exceptions(but that's to be expected). Some ones really standing out to me here are Westbrook as the 12th best peak and Dwight the 17th best peak.

It seems like this is being heavily influenced by which year you chose as peak, and how far each player went in the playoffs that particular year (which is often influenced by injuries or other players' performances). For instance, wouldn't Nash fare much better if you choose '06 or '10 as his peak, since he went to the conference finals? The difference between that 1.2 and 1.4 factor is pretty huge considering that you give playoffs 50% weighting of peak.

It also penalizes guys like Durant who had a great regular season in '14 but not a great playoffs (partly because his team wasn't full-strength). I don't think giving the '14 playoffs 50% of the weight of Durant's peak is really an accurate portrayal of him as a player at his peak, considering he had already shown he could perform much better in the playoffs in previous years. The only way this really makes sense is if you really place a ton of importance on having your best regular season and your best playoff run come in the same season. Why not choose each player's best regular season and best playoffs from within that prime window you selected instead of being forced to stick with a single season for both?

If you take away the award, you basically turn the NBA player into a stat padding rank and you don't want to see stat-padding guys being higher than Russell on the GOAT list. So it is important that we define and find that medium of stat-padding within the constrain of winning.

Yes, Russell gets the full DBPMstd which we can assume to be at the level of D-Rob/Hakeem defense. The margin of Russell's DBPM value is probably +-1 difference.

Oh, I was in a hurry so the prime formula name is not update. It should be this...

PRIME = (AVERAGE(PER1 to PER7)*PERstd + AVERAGE(TS%1 to TS%7)*TS%std + AVERAGE(WS48-1 to WS48-7)*WS48std + AVERAGE(OBPM1 to OBPM 7)*OBPMstd + AVERAGE(DBPM1 to DBPM7)*DBPMstd)

Basically, the principle is taking the average from best 7 years in their prime multiply the league leader's average of those 4 categories which then give them a 7-years Prime value. Note when I said league leader's average, I'm not talking just the average PER/WS%/TS% of all NBA players throughout history. I'm specially focusing on the leader of PER/WS48/etc... throughout the NBA history. So 15PER is consider average for all NBA players, here a 28PER is an average for the elite GOAT.

In Kobe's case, his rookie year, last season, and an heavily injure season in '14 that I don't count. '15 Kobe was still relatively good, an above average league player. He averaged 17.6 PER and with a positive BPM. I guess 16 and 17 would be technically correct. I decided to round him up. However 1 season is still insignificant to his total GOAT value rank. If you use BPM, like I said, then it's impossible to collect data for players in the 70s and 60s. I generally like PER as a good solid indication of their production above league average. In special circumstance for defensive minded players like Rodman/Ben Wallace, I have to use DBPM and BPM to see which season they deserve.

It is just common sense. When we think of ranking players, two things pop up in our head... how well that players played in their prime and how much winning did they do in the process. With that two criteria, it will pretty much set them high on the GOAT rank from most consensus GOAT list. That's why they are both equally around 70% of the GOAT total, receiving the high percentage mark. Peak is important and our common sense also say that it should not be higher than prime as a Prime value is harder to achieve. So that how I deride to the conclusion of 35x35x20x10 and the result demonstrated that that balance.

Yes, I think people often get fixated on Nash leading this crazy offensive team but it wasn't just him, it's a combination of system and the right type of players fitting his skill and are in their prime. As far as I'm concern doing Nash, he is overrated. He is often a defensive liability on the court and I suppose the result value for Nash demonstrates that weakness. As far as 2006 and 2007, I did compare both and both are rather comparable.

Peak, by definition, is about single season play so if I would to do a different season regular and postseason year, then it doesn't make sense to call it a peak. Kobe is not a co-batman. He was a robin. Though a very good Robin but still a Robin. Both Kobe/Wade play their complementary star role to offset the pressure on the team best player (Shaq/Lebron) in their respective run.

Top 10 is pretty much spot on. This is a pretty good formula to rank the very best of all-time. I think these types of formulas may break down a little lower down the ranks, but it's a great way to put together the top 20 all-time.

LeBron will probably finish as #2 all-time, when it's all said and done. Especially if he can will the Cavs to one more championship.

Mikan for me is the real wild card; he had a monster impact (unlike Walton whose greatness is one season and speculation) but the whole 50s thing is difficult to judge. Cousy is tricky too since his impact in the years of Russell greatness was not that great; especially with his regular postseason swoon. Pettit is easier since he maintained his greatness from the 50s into the 60s where he was roughly at an equal level to Elgin Baylor up until his last season (with less games missed and probably greater defensive impact).
