For a country that is supposed to be relatively liberal compared to most of the world, its conservative side really comes out when talking about gambling, alcohol, weed, and prostitution.

What I'd say is the existence of "ESPN Bet" is what causes that statement. And I'm not sure at all it was a blunder. The reason all these segments are now in games, halftime shows and sports channels is every person now has a 24/7 casino as far away as their pocket and the network it is the owner of the casino.

Yeah, I land on your side of the argument here. I think betting while legal should be treated like tobacco (as in you can't advertise).

It's absolutely insane that from the pre-game, to in-game, half-time and post-game commentary and analysis are 60-70% about lines, bets, wagers, and promotions to sign-up. All the kids that are growing up with this are the ones I fear for the most and think will lead to a gambling epidemic in the future.

I took my 6 year nephew to a game around Christmas and all inside the arena as you are walking towards you seat all the giant displays were full of odds, lines and o/u etc. He even asked me what the flashing, moving numbers meant and I played it off but I think it's pretty fried that we are normalizing this for little kids as a part of the game.

Also, I got into the same gambling argument in a group chat recently and the group was evenly split on banning gambling advertising vs. not and a few of the not people cited Europe and how legal it has been there for years. I did some more research and it turns out MPs in UK are moving to limit gambling advertising in sports due to negative effects on kids. So if that's happening in Europe now, I assume the same will happen in North America in 5-10 years as well.

This is the most predictable outcome imaginable once the NBA starting shoving gambling down everybody's throats. It's disgraceful what the league is doing.

They'll make an example out of Porter but the NBA is almost entirely to blame for this situation.

In the tech and media world, no they are not. People in college do not know any other life than one with a smart phone. There's enough data to see whether sports betting on your smartphone will lead to the end of western civilization.
